The Design Manual
In 2000, UNSW Press will publish 'The Design Manual' by David Whitbread. This comprehensive new reference guide covers all aspects of contemporary design, extended to practical issues in production and digital publishing essential to the professional or student designer.
If you would like your work to illustrate the design principles and techniques discussed in the book, please submit it to David Whitbread Design
by Wednesday 15 December 1999.
All entries should be posted to
David Whitbread Design, PO Box 3127, Weston Creek ACT 2611.
Entry is free: there is no submission fee. If selected by the author, your work will be published as an illustration in 'The Design Manual'. It will be captioned by the author to point out a particular design feature of the work and will be fully credited according to the information you supply with your entry. It must therefore be accurate, spell-checked and copyright cleared for reproduction.
Entries should be submitted as either TIFF or EPS files on a CD or zip disk; on slide or transparency; or send an unmounted, printed sample of the work. Unfortunately, submissions (including CDs and zip disks) cannot be returned. But please no more than five entries per person.
Please supply the following information for each entry: Title of entry; client; art director/designer; studio; illustrator/photographer/author (and other credits as applicable).
It should be clearly labelled -- preferably typed -- and an overall contact name, postal address, phone number and email address supplied.
The sheet containing all this information should be signed and dated and state that: 'The entrant has granted the rights to David Whitbread Design and UNSW Press to reproduce slides, transparencies, digital or printed images in 'The Design Manual' by David Whitbread. Some images may appear in print and on screen for promotional purposes as well.'
David Whitbread Design and UNSW Press assume all entries are original and are the works and property of the entrant. David Whitbread Design and UNSW Press are not liable for any copyright infringement on the part of the entrant. Selected entries may be used by David Whitbread Design in the UNSW Press publication, 'The Design Manual' and in the promotion of the book without further permission (including promotional use on the UNSW Press or David Whitbread Design web sites). Details submitted with the entry are used as copy for the credits in the book and David Whitbread Design and UNSW Press accept no responsibility for any inaccuracies in the details submitted.
'The Design Manual' is not a design 'annual' so the work you submit can be anything from your portfolio: it does not necessarily need to be current work -- just excellent work. While some images may be selected to be printed in the colour section of the book, most will appear in black and white, so you may prefer to submit mono or limited colour work.
Commissioned as a companion volume to the 'Style Manual', 'The Design Manual' will be published by UNSW Press as a reference for graphic design studios and desktop publishers and is expected to become an essential text book for graphic design students in Australia. It covers projects and production issues for print and screen-based media. Design tasks are divided into sections on publication, corporate identity, screen-based and advertising design.
So 'The Design Manual' covers conceptual approaches, planning and project development techniques for print, web and CD ROM production. There is discussion of specific skills like logo and icon design; stationery, catalogue, annual report and newsletter production; storyboarding and animation techniques, among others. There are numerous checklists and practical tips throughout the text. The production section discusses layout and typography for print and screen; colour and colour systems; printing, finishing and specialty processes!
It discusses the use of illustration and photography, graphs and tables, style sheets and navigation systems, and concludes with a bit about contracts and industry practices. 'The Design Manual' does not address the use of specific software or hardware -- it is about how to design. (There are plenty of books that can teach people how to use the technology...) It will be an affordable Australian reference that talks about the design process in realistic detail.
