Q. We have a project that will be printed by 28 June 2002 but the deadline for entries is also the 28 June. Is it eligible for entry? If it is, can I send it with my other entries?
A. According to the entry guidelines it is eligible. Please e-mail me at gm@agda.com.au to let me know that all your entries are arriving after the 28 June for that reason. Cataloguing of entries is being conducted during the week of 1 July, so please ensure that they arrive that week. If you have any further difficulties, please ring me on 08 82040949.
Q. We received the reminder call for entries this week and never received the first call. This only leaves us a week to organise our entries, some of which have to be photographed. Can you help us with the 28 June deadline?
A. Please e-mail me gm@agda.com.au or fax me at 61-8-84319192 your request and also the list of entries that you are finalising for entry, by 28 June. Cataloguing of entries is being conducted during the week of 1 July, so please ensure that your entries arrive that week.
Q. Can you clarify what is meant by a single fee as opposed to a range/series fee?
A. A single item qualifies for a single fee; for example, a business card, or a poster. A set or range of items like a stationary range which consists of more than one item (e.g. business card and letterhead, or even a range of different business card designs for the one company), or a range of implementation (stationery and signage and website for the one job), which are all part of the same campaign or promotion, will qualify for the range/series fee, and this fee covers all the items for that entry.
Q. What happens if I've submitted my entries into the wrong categories?
A. During the sorting and cataloguing of entries, all submissions will be checked, and will b moved to the correct categories where appropriate.
Q. How do I qualify for a member's entry fee?
A. By joining AGDA; the form is available from the website. Please ensure that you, as the member submitting the work, has made appropriate contribution to the work entered.
Q. Who gets the winning certificate?
A. Either the person or the company listed as entrant gets the certificate. Additional certificates can be purchased at cost of production as set by the supplier.
Q. Which category should I submit my brochure entries?
A. Enter them in 3(a), 3(b) or 3(c).
Q. How do we submit a website entry?
A. Supply the url address, with the 100 words explaining the solution process and on the entry form. You can also supply some printouts of some of the web pages, mounted on black board, as an optional extra if you wish.
Q. How do I enter books, catalogues, annual reports and brochures. I would prefer to provide the actual pieces of work and not paste the back covers to the board.
A. I would suggest the following:
Catalogues, brochures, books, reports can be pocket mounted on to board e.g. cut a U-shaped outline through the board. The U-shape should be slightly larger than the width of the entry item. Slip through an acetate sheet about two-thirds the height of the booklet; then tape the acetate on the back of the board. This will form a pocket for the entry to sit and for the judges to peruse and put back into the sleeve /pocket for the next person.
Alternatively, you can provide corner holds to mount it. The corner holds can be the photographic hinges of paper or plastic, or, they can be made of elastic bands threaded through from the back of the board and held by shoelace ends.
Some entrants provide the cover and selected pages mounted flat on board. This is usually done as an optional extra, or if the actual item is not available.
Q. We are having difficulty downloading the PDF of the Entry Form so that we can save into Illustrator and enter the information directly. When we click the download button on the AGDA site, it takes us to the form and viewed in our browser, ie Netscape, rather than download the file as an individual file.
A. Our sincere apologies regarding the difficulty; I will pass on the message to our webmaster; if it's anything at our end, he will be able to expedite a solution. In the meantime, I have attached the forms to this email; let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
Q. I have designed some labels for some wine. I was wondering how I can join the competition.
A. There are 2 ways to enter:
a) Send the labelled bottles in the polystyrene containers sold through Australia Post and send by mail or courier. Supply black boards with a mark for placement if possible. Mark the package FRAGILE for mailing; OR
b) you can photograph the bottles and send them as photographic prints mounted on board, or as trannies or slides.
Q. We also have a 3D box that is approx 10cm high. Do we mount the base of the box onto the board?
A. Supply a mount board for the box to be placed for exhibition purposes. Mark the centre, or outline the placement in pencil for the box to be placed. We will place the box at the judging according to what you supply. Just package the box and the board as loose items together.
Q. Is there any more detail covering the award categories besides the list in the download documents? This would be the first we enter the awards and I would like to understand the whole thing a bit better before preparing the entry.
A. If you would like to enter anything that doesn't fit with what is listed (we have had enquiries regarding brochures, press ads, websites and so on, which don't quite fit with the descriptions outlined), just write or ring me and I will work it out for you. OR, let me know, send the entries and I will put them in the correct categories when we catalogue your work. I can also advise on mounting if that's what you need.
Q. We are planning on entering a national campaign which includes postcards, A3 posters, bookmarks etc. I need to know if these have to be mounted and entered separately or if we can submit a montage of the pieces on one large mount board?
A. You can enter the items as a group or as separate items as explained below:
a) You can enter the postcards as one series/range entry, the posters as a separate series/range entry, and the bookmarks as another separate series/range entry. This will incur three separate lots of fees, and each series/range of items will be judged in their separate lots.
b) If you wish to enter all the items together, on one large board that is also possible and you enter them as one series/range entry and pay the one series/range fee. The items will be judged together as a group. If the items are mounted on say, 3 separate boards, simply label the boards and entry forms as 1 of 3, 2 of 3, and 3 of 3.
Q. If my submission is only a section feature of a website site, I assume it would be in the "6E" category? Could you please advise me on the best method of submission. I'm not sure how to provide this entry, but my understanding of your "entry checklist" suggests I am required to provide printed examples? (this would remove its functionality). Can, for example, it be provided on disk/cd (this would be a slightly less functional version of the published version, as the database functions would be removed). Other suggestions?
A. 6(e) is fine. Good question. I recommend that you submit the url with your entry form and include printouts of some sample pages if you wish as an optional extra. The printouts will have to be mounted on the black board.
Q. I am having some difficulty getting the specifications for the paper stock and printer from my client (they handled production management). Is it considered bad form not to include these details?
A. It's an opportunity for designers to acknowledge the suppliers they use, particularly if they have a working relationship. Not a good thing, if the job does win an award and the suppliers aren't recognised. If in this case, it was handled by your client and they are unable to supply the details to you, then it is outside your hands.
Q. What is the difference between Books - Instructional OR Reference?
A. Instructional would apply to a book that contains in the main, step by step instructions on how to do something e.g. recipe book, or pilot 'how-to-fly' manual. Reference would apply to a book that has a body of knowledge or information that can be referred to or used, e.g. an encyclopaedia or a travel book on Italy.
