by AGDA Awards 2006 Committee
Winners of the 8th AGDA National Biennial Awards 2006 brought to you by WACOM were announced in a gala presentation dinner at Parliament House in Canberra on Saturday 28 October. The evening was hosted by comedian and entertainer Shaun Micallef who had previously hosted the AGDA National Biennial Awards in Melbourne (2002) and Sydney (2004). Micallef kept the 340-strong audience-made up of designers, clients and sponsors-both entertained and informed as he led the 2 hour plus presentation.
The night was a great success and category sponsor Rod Williamson of RedConnect, said 'In 1996 when Canberra last hosted the Awards they raised the bar. In 2006 they've done it again.' Awards Chair, Liam Camilleri commented 'The night ran very smoothly, all the guests I spoke to were delighted and I was overjoyed with the many postive remarks received. It appeared that everybody had a wonderful night, and this was due to the wonderful work by the Awards Committee and the great support from all our sponsors.'
Over 2,300 entries were received for the Awards across 20 categories, including Corporate Identity, Publications, Digital Media, Packaging, Environmental Design and Design Effectiveness. In total there were 309 winners, broken down into 153 Finalist winners, 147 Distinction winners and 9 winners achieving AGDA's highest accolade, the Pinnacle. A full list of winners from all categories will be available on the AGDA website shortly.
Inaugural AGDA Student Awards
In 2006, for the first time AGDA ran a Student Awards program, calling for entries across 5 categories in Idenity, Print, Digitial, 3-D and Craft. Almost 500 entries were received from design students and recent graduates, who were studying between January 2004 and June 2006. There were 52 Finalist winners and 5 Distinction winners.
The Australian Graphic Design Association's awards program recognises design excellence and helps to define Australia's design culture and identity. The Awards capture a reference point for future generations, a time capsule, if you will, of design excellence and achievement that continues to grow with each AGDA Awards cycle.
AGDA Spicers Paperpoint Hall of Fame
Starting with the first AGDA Awards program, Melbourne (1992), designers who have made outstanding contributions to the design community throughout their career are inducted into the AGDA Spicers Paperpoint Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame was the brainchild of Paperpoint's Gary Wilson and at the AGDA National Biennial Awards presentation in Canberra in 2006 he was proud to induct Frank Eidlitz (1923-1997) and Brian Sadgrove (1938-) as the newest Hall of Fame members.
Of Eidlitz, Max Robinson, Hall of Fame selection panel member said, 'His was a stellar career in graphic design. Blue chip clients, indefatigable energy, and a gift for constant self promotion.'
Sadgrove, in Canberra to accept his induction, is the designer of many well known logos, such as the National Heart Foundation, Quit smoking campaign and Compass airlines, as well as the current $50 polymer banknote, drew the following praise from Brett Phillips of Melbourne studio 3 Deep Design, 'Armed often with an irreverent and playful use of colour and always with a reductionist approach to line and shape, Brian wove a delicate thread through many brutal decades of design to ensure that his work remained fresh, elegant and unmistakably his.'
The AGDA Awards Committee congratulates all Award winners and sponsors for making the night a resounding success.
