Melbourne Designers Host Dinner
Friday Night, November 8

Choose from a selection of interesting, renowned, and hip eating experiences... and hosts. Book for one, or come with a crowd; a top way to kick-off the weekend. Select from the list of dinner hosts below, marking the number of people that you would like to book for. Group size will be limited to tables of ten on a first-in, best-dressed basis; selecting a first, second and third choice is probably a good idea. A deposit of $30 per person is required at this stage. This deposit is non-refundable.

Price ranges have been provided as a guide for a meal excluding drinks at each restaurant. On the night, the final bill will be divided between the guests, and the difference between the deposit and the final cost will be payable. Bookings for the dinner will close on October 10. When you receive your Awards tickets you will also have your dinner confirmed and be provided with details of your host and restaurant.

FUTUREBRAND
Pelican
16 Fitzroy Street, St. Kilda. Tel. 9525 5847
Reflecting the urban chic of St. Kilda, this restaurant designed by 6 degrees has a lived-in feel even though it has only recently opened. A lot of attention has been given to the design of the interior and the food. A tapas style menu offering a range of fascinating options is good value for money. PRICE RANGE $25-40

Philippa Pendlebury & Andrew Majzner
PAPER STONE SCISSORS
Da Noi
95 Toorak Road, South Yarra. Tel. 9866 5975
It's a new experience. You never know what you are going to eat as there is no menu. the food just keeps coming. It's Sardinian food so it's not your usual cuisine that you would expect, and it's always delicious. PRICE RANGE $35-60

Dean Butler
STORM
Pearl
631-633 Church Street, Richmond. Tel. 9421 4599
Chef Geoff Lindsay's food is deluxe and surprising. Signature dishes such as the watermelon, feta and sprout salad with tomato jelly push the mix-and-match boundaries, but aplomb far outweighs bomb... Even the critics would have to admit they've never had anything like crispy taro dumplings stuffed with Valrhona chocolate... (Dani Valent, Sunday Life, February 2002) PRICE RANGE $75-100

Andrew Hoyne
HOYNE DESIGN
Circa at The Prince
2 Acland Street, St. Kilda. Tel. 9536 1122
Of the enormous range of great experiences the Melbourne food scene offers, I chose Circa because it is the experience I'd like non-Melbournians to take home. Circa is sophisticated and theatrical. Waaay modern. The ultimate example of why Melbourne is so famous for its unrivalled food quality and innovation. Circa is simply the cherry on Melbourne's cake. Past the (extremely) groovy facade and cool(?) people, the place is actually heaps of fun. (Which is what it's all about, right!) Circa serves more than just spectacular food. It's a dining experience. For those with after dinner stamina, we.ll wander downstairs to a private booth at the Mink Vodka Bar. (And for the real late nighters, we might even sneak onto the roof for a swim later...) PRICE RANGE $75-100

Max Robinson
ROBINSON TEAM
Barolo
74 Toorak Road, South Yarra. Tel. 9866 2744
Barolo. Been there for yonks in Toorak Road just opposite Avoca Street. In its various incarnations it has been run by Calabrians, Lebanese, Asians and even Tasmanian people. But its fate is now being guided by Don Heggie, an urbane Aussie with a ripper collection of works on paper, with which he adorns the restaurants walls. There are Boyds, Blackmans, Whiteleys, Tuckers, Percevals. All original. All beautiful. There are no Max Robinsons yet, but we're working on that. The food ain't bad or too dear. I have been known to sit outside from 8.30 in the morning 'til 3.00 the following morning. But that was then... PRICE RANGE $35-55

Tanja & Darren Ledwich
MEGAN STONE DESIGN
I Carusi
46A Holmes Street, Brunswick. Tel. 9386 5522
It is the most fantastic Pizza place in Melbourne - authentic and real. Being down the far end of Lygon Street, it is an opportunity to see and experience Melbourne culture at its most honest and unpretentious. PRICE RANGE $20-30

Stephen Huxley
SWINBURNE NATIONAL SCHOOL OF DESIGN/ DESKTOP MAGAZINE
Anak Ku
472 Church Street, Richmond. Tel. 9428 9688
Run by a woman who has a stash of secret recipes and her antique-collecting husband, Anak Ku is full of surprises. There are wild and complex flavours, massive Javanese wall panels and great views past the Dimmey's clock to the city. The food is Peranakan, or Straits-Chinese, a fusion born of the arrival of Chinese migrants to the Malay-Indonesian archipelago in the 15th century. PRICE RANGE $25-35
