A listing of sources of web and other digital statistics and research. As with all statistics, use with care and caution! It always pays to check multiple sources for the same trend - this is known in the trade as developing a 'consensus view.'

All submissions welcome, except for shamelessly commercial self-promos.

  1. CyberAtlas

One of my favourite sources of aggregated data and research reports, with a enormouse range of topics covered. Always a good place to start. [alpt]

  2. eMarketer

Great range of stats and reports, but with a strong commercial focus which means you have to buy the more in-depth reports (not cheap!). Their trademarked 'Source Comparison' approach provides consensus estimates from sets of forecasts. [alpt]

  3. FuckedCompany

Pardon the name - this is a great site for dotbomb watchers. An informal news and rumour mill that tracks site shutdowns, business layoffs and closures. If you are doing a deal with someone, it may be worth searching for their company name on this site - just in case. [alpt]

  4. Nielsen Netratings

Another establishment web stats and research agency, owned by Nielsen Media Research and ACNielsen (of TV broadcast ratings fame). Good commercial product if you have the need and the money. The free stats cover top 10 properties, advertisers and web usage for a large range of countries including Australia. Main competitor is Jupiter Mediametrix. [alpt]

  5. NUA

Broad range of internet surveys covering everything from specialist sectors to demographic groups. Plus a good collection of trend articles sourced from all over. [alpt]

  6. Taylor Nelson Sofres Interactive

The digital-and-internet-watching division of a well-established global research agency, with ambitions to take on Jupiter Mediametrix and Netratings. The free stats and reports are not bad, but a crummy information architecture and brochureware interface makes accessing them hard work. [alpt]

  7. The Standard

Internet and technology magazine that was, for a time, a commercially successful darling of that overhyped world. Now sadly just an archive of articles published Jan 1998 through to Sep 2001. Still worth a read, especially if you need a little historical context to make sense of today's trends. [alpt]
