Firing up a Mac in the bedroom was never the ideal way to start out in business, but some managed it —or 'lucked' it. For those who feel that six clients = better than one employer, out on your own is the place to be. But now, even the smallest start-up needs more business savvy than luck: in getting funds; finding a location; looking for that first client; financial management; promotion. Down the path there'll be cool things like: employing someone, managing debt, getting good advisers—and winning design awards. Let's untie that bundle called 'success' and look inside.
Liz Grant - Designgrant
Liz Grant is Creative Director of Designgrant, a 2-person design studio based in Surrey Hills Victoria. After 6 years as senior art director in several Melbourne advertising agencies, Liz started her own design & communication consultancy from her home. Eight years later the business grew too big for the kitchen table, so she rented some space, hired staff and formed her company Designgrant. Designgrant has now been operating for 5 years and concentrates mainly on corporate communications, annual reports, print and press advertising and tourism promotion.
Liz will discuss the steps required to ramp a small home-based consultancy up to the next level including getting finance, writing a business plan, finding appropriate space, fitting out a studio with equipment, hiring and managing staff, facilities management, creating important networks, promoting the business, finding the best suppliers, keeping out of the RED and the importance of balancing your lifestyle!
