More than TRIPLE the Value, our first NSW Nuts and Bolts Seminar for 2005 "Hatch ALL THREE eggs" on February 7th, covered the topics of Design Effectiveness and The Triple Bottom Line. A well attended night with quality speakers on subjects gaining more momentum daily and topped off with the launch of a new Eco Paper guide made specifically for Australian and New Zealand Designers.

Damian Borchok, from Landor, eloquently elaborated on how "the Big end of town" is serious about public perception and our future with a detailed revue of Beyond Petroleum, it's direction and vision. Unilever and even McDonalds are making more considered choices beyond the profit line. Damian says, "Many of our clients are embracing these concepts while looking for new business opportunity and planning for the longer term".

David Gravina of Digital Eskimo had lots to say on how to run a design studio with ethics and a conscience. Good sense with practical examples, methods of client screening and a timely suggestion for us not to wait till the rest of the world industrialises. He quoted many excellent literary references, though I noticed he hadn't mentioned a new Australian book "The Natural Advantage of Nations" by Karlson 'Charlie' Hargroves; Michael H. Smith. Available now, it follows on in the tradition of "Natural Capitalism" by Hawken & Lovins', and promises to be a compelling directive for business, government and all society. David has also kindly placed a copy of his thought provoking presentation "The Need for Change & The Role of Designers" at : http://www.digitaleskimo.net/archived_news.php scroll down to : AGDA Presentation

Dave Taylor from Ambience Entertainment is certainly a man of embodied energy. Someone quipped that his pommy accent sounds like the "Thomas the Tank Engine narrator", and his logic just about took us back to the age of steam. He maintained, "Today's lessons on TBL are nothing revolutionary, nothing new", explaining that every saying he ever heard from Mum embodied the modern concepts of conscience, preparation and common sense (as applied logic), things we have always been taught. He also graphically demonstrated how to save paper by using the full sheet when planning for print, reducing waste and saving money whilst making yourself part of the solution.

The finale for the night was the Launch of the REAP guide.
Recommended Environmentally Accountable Papers is an ongoing survey of our major paper suppliers that will be updated twice a year. Highlighting some of the best stocks available with tools for easy comparison, the site is fast loading and informative, showing weights, grades and eco print ideas. A first for Australasia, it's a developing resource for graphic designers supported by AGDA and the Society for Responsible Design, the full details at: http://www.green.net.au/srd/reap.htm
