The University of Technology, Sydney's groundbreaking, boundary crossing graduate design exhibition - the only exhibition of its kind in Australia - will focus both industry and public attention on the university's City campus from 7 - 10 December, 2005.
Last year's first ever combined show for Visual Communication, Industrial Design, Interior Design and Fashion and Textile Design attracted more than 4000 people on its opening night, a figure set to be topped when UTS: Design 05 opens on Tuesday 6 December.
"There's nothing else like this exhibition," said Head of the School of Design in the Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building, Professor Douglas Tomkin. "UTS is the only university in Australia where these four design disciplines are taught in a single faculty."
About 150 final-year students will be exhibiting their work during UTS: Design 05, including the multimedia projects, catwalk fashion parades, that will be held on the opening night.
"It's a show of many facets," said Professor Tomkin. "Standout projects in this year's exhibition include an interactive website on weather and emotions, a magazine concept blending sports, fashion and design, a walking device for the visually impaired, improved ergonomic seating for truck drivers, a range of clothing inspired by the British artist Bridget Riley and a research lab for lighting.
"Our graduates enter industry knowing both where design has been and where it is going, conscious of the rewards design offers and the responsibilities it carries to society and the environment.
"Some recent graduates are already making their mark. UTS 2004 Visual Communications graduate Karen Wong, won a British Council scholarship to study in the UK while industrial designer David Mansueto won a scholarship for postgraduate study at Milan Polytechnic.
"Graduating fashion students Katherine Boyer, Kim Furrugia and Fiorella Galardi were winners in the inaugural Lancome Colour Design Award while 2004 interior design graduate Amber Guenther won the Design Institute of Australia Design Graduate of the Year for 2005."
The exhibition will open to the public from Wednesday 7 December to Saturday 10 December, 10am - 4pm, UTS: Peter Johnson Building, 702-730 Harris St, Ultimo.
