Press release: for immediate release
Canberra to host premier national graphic design awards
Canberra will be hosting the Australian Graphic Design Association's 8th National Biennial Awards presentation on Saturday 28 October 2006. The presentation will be held in the Great Hall of Parliament House. Liam Camilleri, Awards Chair, commented, 'Parliament House is arguably one of Australia's most beautifully designed buildings, every detail has been expertly created, resulting in an extraordinary design statement that excels in both form and function. It is fitting that Australia's premier graphic design awards will be announced in such a stunning location.'
The Awards are held at various locations around Australia and were most recently held in Sydney's Circular Quay precinct in November 2004. Canberra last hosted the Awards ten years ago. Mr Camilleri said, 'In many ways, the National Awards held in Canberra in 1996 set the precedent for other host cities to follow and we will take inspiration from this fact. We hope to attract 500 delegates to the National Awards in October.' He continued, 'Not only is Parliament House the perfect location for the AGDA National Awards, the Canberra region is also an ideal meeting place that will offer Australia's designers a multitude of activities to entertain and inspire over the weekend. From the national institutions scattered around picturesque Lake Burley Griffin, to award winning restaurants and wineries in and around the city, designers from around the country will be able to discover some of the secrets that make Canberra such a great city.'
The AGDA National Awards adjudication are open for work printed, published or installed from July 2004 to May 2006 and cover over 15 categories including corporate identity, digital media, environmental graphics and design effectiveness. The Call for Entries will open in April and are scheduled to close in late June. Adjudication will be conducted by a panel of esteemed national and international professionals. Based on the success of previous Awards, entries should number around 2500. Rita Siow, AGDA General Manager, says, 'The AGDA National Awards provide an important barometer of our ever evolving graphic design industry. Recognising the best creative design solutions from the past two years will monitor quality and standards of the current day, and at the same time provide inspiration for the future direction and development of our industry.'
