"I think the most important thing for a designer is the culture. The more you know, the freer you are to design and to choose your way."
- Leonardo Sonnoli
Leonardo Sonnoli was born in Trieste, Italy in 1962. He received a Diploma from the Istituto Superiore Industrie Artistiche of Urbino and gained work experience at the Tassinari/Vetta studio in Trieste. After working as the creative director at the Dolcini Associati Studio in Pesaro from 1990 - 2001, Sonnoli became partner in 2002 of the Tassinari/Vetta company founded by Paolo Tassinari and Pierpaolo Vetta, called CODEsign.
He works for cultural events, designing for the Electa Art and Architecture Publishing, Palazzo Grassi, the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome, the Mart-Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and served as Art Director of the 50th International Art Exhibition of the Biennale of Venice.
His posters are part of numerous international public collections such as the National Library of France in Paris, the Museum of Decorative Arts of Zurich, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Colorado State University. He has had group exhibitions in Bonn, Zurich, Toyama, Tokyo, Ningbo, New York, and solo exhibitions at Chaumont, Tehran, Palermo and most recently his S.EX. (Sonnoli Exhibition) in Ljubljana, which has housed eminent shows from Philippe Apeloig Paula Scher and Seymour Chwast.
Sonnoli is a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale (2000-), elected as Italy President and member of the AGI International Executive Commitee since 2003. He is teaching at the Iuav University of Venice and the High Institute for Industrial Arts of Urbino, living and working between Rimini and Trieste.
"(His) beliefs," according to fellow AGI member George Hardie, " provide the discipline for the work and the editorial system - what is included? What is rejected? The subtle rules that in effect tie both the designer's hands behind his back. As always it is the struggle to wriggle and eventually break free that the audience enjoys."
Break free and enjoy the typographic manifesti that is singularly impressive of this intrepid graphic designer and teacher!
