'I notice things and I get things noticed.'
-George Hardie
AGDA is delighted to present George Hardie, acclaimed illustrator, designer and teacher, for the 2006 AGDA International Speaker Tour.
George Hardie trained as a graphic designer at St Martin's and the Royal College of Art in London. He was a partner at NTA studios and designed many legendary record covers for groups such as Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin with Hipgnosis.
He has worked as an illustrator for some thirty-five years, commissioned to solve problems and make illustrations for a variety of clients in many countries (fourteen to date). His work primarily involves ideas that are carefully composed and crafted into graphic art.
As part of a process he describes as 'going amateur', George has made and published a number of books which he explains as "graphics without clients" rather than artist's books. And since 1990, as Professor of Graphic Design at the University of Brighton, he has led a multi-disciplinary postgraduate program concerned with sequence and narrative.
An on-going relationship with the Royal Mail led to his 2005 commission for the Magic! Commemorative Stamps series which have become highly regarded for their graphic and technical innovation using interactive, thermochromatic and optical solutions.
A winner and juror of the D&AD Awards, George is a member of Alliance Graphique Internationale and its elected UK President in 2000. He has recently earned the title of Royal Designer to Industry.

Billy Blue
Billy Blue first arrived in Sydney as a convict in 1801. He was thought to have been half American Indian, half African black. He became good friends with Governor Macquarie, not easy for a black ex con, then or now. He began a rowing boat service on Sydney Harbour and although he was caught smuggling rum tied to the bottom of his boat he was given a grant of 80 acres at what is now called Blues Point. Billy Blue then and now believes that being able to deliver is important but it only pays off when it's backed by original thinking and a great idea. http://www.billyblue.com.au
