Typography legend makes waves with Paul Davis, Vince Frost and more.

Despite his admission "I am not a lover of surfing or water", Weingart is bound to make waves at AGDA's National Conference in Queensland's Sunshine Coast!

In the sixties, Wolfgang Weingart decided to develop an anti-Swiss style of typography "at a time when Helvetica ruled the corporate world", reported Steve Heller in a recent interview of the typography legend. Weingart became known as a rebel at the Basel School where he had started his teaching career at the invitation of Armin Hofmann and Emil Ruder.

During the ensuing years, students from all over the world came under his wing and those of his colleagues, returning home with new-found knowledge and the inspiration to find 'their own path and dream'.

His teaching and experimenting led to his writing an introduction on the principles of typography, published in Design Quarterly in 1985. It made universal impact as virtually the first manifesto for typography, a timeless reference.

In the midst of this amazing journey of 'New Wave' thinking and working, he has published a long awaited, impressive 500-page book Wolfgang Weingart: Typography (which will be available for signing and for purchase at the conference).

Recently 'retired' from teaching, Weingart continues to work, lecture and inspire, only last week honoured with a Doctorate from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, and this July running a summer program on typography in Basel on the theme of 'back to basics'.

After which he will come to what he refers to as Australia's 'gold beach' and take part in AGDA's inspirational weekend. Yin and yan. Old ways, new waves. Basic tenets versus fashion trends.

Be prepared for some non-synchronised 'swimming' activities at the AGDA National Conference. Particularly with Weingart leading the way!
