7th AGDA International Speaker Tour 14th - 29th March 2005

AGDA is delighted to present Stefan Sagmeister for its 7th AGDA International Speaker Tour of seven major Australian cities.
Sagmeister, a native of Austria, received his MFA in graphic design from the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and, as a Fulbright Scholar, a master's degree from Pratt Institute in New York.
After returning and working in Austria, he attained a job at age 29 with Leo Burnett Advertising in Hong Kong, and after a brief stint working from the beaches of Sri Lanka, he landed a job at M&Co in New York City, working as senior designer under the legendary Tibor Kalman.
When M&Co closed its doors, Sagmeister formed the New York based Sagmeister Inc. in 1993 and has since designed graphics and packaging for clients such as the Rolling Stones, David Byrne, Lou Reed, Aerosmith and Pat Metheny. His work has been nominated five times for the Grammies, won most international design awards, including D&AD and New York ADC, and exhibited in museums and galleries from Zurich to Tokyo.
In 2001 a monograph about his work titled "Sagmeister, Made you Look" was published by Booth-Clibborn editions
Sagmeister's work has been described as
"striking to the point of sensationalism, and humorous but in such an unsettling way that it's nearly, but not quite unacceptable[sigma]..his work mixes sexuality with wit and a whiff of the sinister. The strength of his work lies in his ability to conceptualise: to come up with potent, original, stunningly appropriate ideas."
Presently, despite a busy studio, he finds time to travel, lecture - to advocate for change in the design world, "to touch somebody's heart with design".
