Fresh from his London exhibition of hundreds of new drawings...
Are they as simple as they look?
Does Paul Davis mean anything he says?
And just what is he talking about anyway?
This confusion and tension delights him and informs his very best work.
Davis says, "as you wake up you realize that you have to do something ö you have to fight the fear. Then you must reflect upon it. And so it goes on. And on. So there will be hundreds of new drawings, a large sculpture, a film, sometimes paper boats and a dodgy print of the world's most powerful super-computer. I hope to God it makes someone happier."
Often starting from overheard conversations and chance observations, Davis' immodest drawings turns the way we think upside down. Alternately anarchic, profound and provocative, he uses his drawings to laugh about life, intelligence, stupidity, culture and ponders the way we love and hate.
As one reviewer says, "his project on What the Americans think of the English saw him touring the United States, cataloguing every er and um along the way. The resulting series says as much about modern culture as any sociological thesis, says more about the world we live in than the individual contributors could ever have realised."
His work has been exhibited worldwide in recent years in Belgium, Paris, London, New York and Tokyo; he has a broad and varied client list including Pentagram, Virgin, IBM and BT and he has won D&Ad awards too numerous to mention, as well as Clio, and Printed Book of the Year for 2004 and 2005.
A master satirist with a firm grasp of the inanity of the human condition, Davis is neither snide nor vicious. More than happy to poke fun at himself, constantly challenging himself to do more, learn more, know more, Davis' keynote presentation titled ÎBoredon is the Enemy' will inspire and invigorate.
- His interest in the world around him, in philosophy, politics and literature ensures that every commercial job, be it for fashion, editorial, whatever, is so much more than just another commission.
- His books Blame Everyone Else (2004), Them and Us (2004) and God Knows (2005) resound with such intelligence, humour and understanding that they will have you laughing out loud.
