Rising Above the Conventional and Acceptable
Balarinji Studio recently celebrated 20 years at the forefront of Australian design.
Founded by designers John and Ros Moriarty, Balarinji is Australia's leading indigenous art and design studio, an Australian success story with a string of impressive achievements, both nationally and internationally.

Taken away from his mother in the Northern Territory at the age of four under the government assimilation policy, John was brought up in a number of boys homes in Sydney and Adelaide, where he studied for his Bachelor of Arts and was awarded a Churchill Fellowship and an Honorary Doctorate.
Today is a full member of the Yanyuwa people of his birthplace, belonging ceremonially to the rainbow snake and kangaroo Dreamings, and as Chairman and Head of Design of Balarinji he continues to celebrate his Aboriginal heritage through art and design, and to maintain his links with Australian and global indigenous peoples and communities.
Ros Moriarty
Designer and Managing Director of Balarinji Studio, Tasmania-born, Ros is a graduate of the Australian National University. Formerly a journalist with Radio Australia in indigenous affairs, women's issues and the environment, she has held numerous senior and board positions including Australian Volunteers, National Gallery of Australia Council, Australian Major Events, Australian Academy of Design and Menzies School of Health Research, Darwin.
Awarded South Australian Business Woman of the Year, the Advance Australia Award for Service to Industry and Commerce, and the St Peter's Citizenship Award, Ros was inducted into the Australian Business Women's Hall of Fame in 1999, and the same year was a finalist in the NSW Telstra Business Women's Awards.
Balarinji Studio clients include Qantas, Bank of America, British Airways, Lendlease, Renault France, Coca Cola Atlanta, and City of Sydney and Balarinji works are held in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia, the Art Gallery of South Australia, Flinders University Art Museum, the Powerhouse Museum of Design, Sydney, and the Centre for Contemporary Graphic Art (CGGA) in Fukuoka, Japan.
John and Ros Moriarty have risen above the conventional and the acceptable, and crossed the great divides in culture and geography.
