Debuting with its March/April issue, Design Edge Canada's premier edition includes a debate on type, a profile of Maclean's new art director Christine Dewairy and tips on press checks and InDesign CS2.

Consider the Collective:More than business as usual
by John Emerson
Some of our most venerable institutions started out as collectives. Before they were Push Pin Studios, they were a network of freelancers in a shared studio space. Before they were Pentagram, they were a partnership of three. In its twenty years, the French studio Grapus grew to encompass three collectives under the same roof.

How will you be travelling to work in 20 years time?
Baltic Design Transfer (BDT), a network for design and business in the
Baltic Sea region is organizing an online design competition to the
subject of future transportation.
The vision is to develop new ideas for transport of people and goods
with the help of existing or with new techniques. We offer creative
people a platform for discussion as well as an opportunity to evaluate
the ideas submitted in terms of their relevance to the public.
During an expert discussion in September 2005, 100 theses to the
subject of future transportation were developed. They are now presented
online to inspire participants of the design award.
Deadline 31 March, 2006
The visualized ideas will be presented online for evaluation involving
experts of the transport sector, designers and the design colleges in
the Baltic Sea Region.
The five best entries will receive the “Future Mobility Design Award
2006”.
