Design, Development and Questions of Direction, Part I
by Tony Fry, Design Philosophy Papers

As the dynamic of globalisation intensifies the reach of a western model of design, more and more designers and design thinkers around the world are becoming concerned about the relation between design and development. The emergence of this concern is to be welcomed, but at the same time, there are serious deficiencies in the way the issue is being approached, this mainly due to a lack of historical perspective. Specifically, the debate is not being sufficiently informed by the history of the critique of development and 'sustainable development' nor by the even longer standing critique of modernity (and the critique of globalisation it implies).

Models of development: How should “development” be defined today?

In this week's feature, Tony Fry challenges our notions of design for development and questions whether the current model of centre/periphery is a relevant framework for future development.

We would like to know how you think “development” should be defined.

AIGA's Annual Design Competitions 27: “365” and “50 Books/50 Covers”: Call for Entries

Round up your finest design - AIGA's annual competitions close March 3. For nearly a century, AIGA's competitions have been among the most prestigious in the design world. This year, we've added two new features to make it even more compelling to enter your work. First, entry forms and payment can now be submitted online, streamlining the process and saving you a lot of time and paperwork. More importantly, all selected  entries will be placed in the AIGA Design Archives http://designarchives.aiga.org, a growing collection of exemplary design work, and archived at the Denver Art Museum.

Details for “365” and “50 Books/50 Covers” - which both close March 3 - can be found at http://competitions.aiga.org.

Stencil Graffiti Capital: Melbourne
Melbourne, Australia
by Jake Smallman & Carl Nyman

http://www.stencilgraffiticapital.com/

>From the jacket:

Stencil graffiti is sweeping the globe. This phenomenon has found its heart in Melbourne, Australia. No other city boasts such quantity and quality of stencil art.

“Stencil Graffiti Capital: Melbourne” is the first book to explore the city’s thought provoking, visually rich stencil graffiti scene. Over 475 color images document the beauty and breadth of the work being produced.

Artists themselves, the authors have had the privilege of going behind the scenes to intimately profile the major protagonists, most of who operate under a code of extreme secrecy.

Featuring work from artists including Meek, Psalm, Sixten, Prism, Meggs, Sunc, Phibs, Rone, Bansky and more, this book is essential for anyone with interests in street art, popular culture and design.
