Call for participation: Making a difference by design
During the Icograda Design Week in Hong Kong, there is an opportunity for Icograda's Member Associations to display the works of their members that address the issues of sustainability and social responsibility. We are interested in showcasing how graphic designers and visual communicators have applied their energies to making a difference by design.

Pierre Bayle Prize for Criticism 2005 awarded to Friend of Icograda, Max Bruinsma
One of the recipients of this year’s Pierre Bayle Prize for Design Criticism is Friend of Icograda, Max Bruinsma.
The jury for this prize, consisting of Maarten Asscher, Ole Bouman (Chair), Lodewijk Brunt, Paul Kuypers and Renny Ramakers commend Bruinsma for his "breadth of subject matter," and go on to state that "he shows erudition and a clear vision on developments in design. But what makes Bruinsma's design critical work so unique is a double craft: he places design quality in a critical perspective, and cultivates critique as a personal way of designing."

Danger Muse Hazards of the Design Critic
David Barringer, United States (republished with permission from the November Issue of I.D. Magazine)
Design is the intent of the maker. And today, so much that we take for granted has actually been designed: the genetic makeup of your filet mignon, the vanilla-scented atmosphere of the restaurant, your pharmacologically enhanced libido.
With so much design pushing itself into the public eye, the critic must look - and push back. Hazards abound: ad hominem attacks, self-aggrandizement, the temptation of a handy-but-unfair pun as a deadline looms ("Eyeland Castaway: Designer Overbored"). Some hazards, though, uniquely plague design critics.

O P I N I O N
Design Criticism: What, in your opinion, is the role of the design critic?
In this week's Feature, design critic David Barringer suggests that "a critic interprets a work and explains to the public why the design in particular and Design in general matters." He goes on to say that "the critic selects but doesn't rank. The public may want a buyer's guide to fraggadorps, but the critic is obliged to compose a thinker's guide to design." We would like to know what you think the role of the design critic is.

What is your method of preference when doing design research?
30% Behavioural. I like to observe, record or videotape designs in use.
39% Participatory. I seek direct user input when developing a design.
34% Survey. I like to ask users questions before and after the design process.
Totals shown may be more or less than 100% due to rounding.
