epOxybOx Gallery hosts simulcast from 'Sharing Dreams 2005', a collaborative U.S./Cuban graphic art show

U.S. restrictions prohibit many Americans from travelling to Cuba as tourists, but art fans had the chance to go there - virtually - last Friday night. That's when the epOxybOx Gallery in Venice, California hosted a live, on-line feed from Havana, allowing gallery visitors to interact with some of the participating artists in 'Sharing Dreams 2005', a graphic art show featuring the collaborative works of American and Cuban artists.

Linotype's First Arabic Type Design Competition: Call for entries

Linotype Library is pleased to invite designers and calligraphers from around the world to take part in its first Arabic Type Design Competition. The competition is the first of its kind in recent years and is a response to the growing publishing demands in the Arab world. Recent developments in font technology have opened new doors for Arabic typography and have eased out the process of developing a complex script like Arabic. Now that technical limitations have been conquered, the remaining challenge is to seek out a new vision of Arabic typography that is free from past limitations, and is in direct contact with the everyday life and usage of the Arabic script. The competition aims to encourage and support the development of Arabic typography and to detect and publish new and original trends in Arabic type design.

Graphic Designer vs Production Artist: What is the difference?

In the most recent edition of Eye magazine, Steven Heller, in an article entitled 'The Next Small Thing', says that "Graphic design came of age in the 1990s" when "the Next Big Thing was a new wave of graphic pioneers, experimenters and theorists doing pioneering, experimental and theoretical design." He goes on to suggest that graphic design is now on the decline causing many of the more creative designers to return to print since the "computer has turned many of us into production artists." We would like to know what you think distinguishes a graphic designer from a production artist.
