'Standards for a safer world': 36th World Standards Day, 14 October 2005
Each year on 14 October, the members of IEC, ISO and ITU celebrate World Standards Day, which is a means of paying tribute to the collaborative efforts of the thousands of experts worldwide who develop the voluntary technical agreements that are published as international standards.

The Metrics of Branding & Marketing
Linda Fisher, Design Management Resources
Corporate directives come and go. And so do corporate trends. There has been a growing, emerging trend for accountability in corporate marketing departments in recent months, and that is expected to increase. During the 90's, business was booming, stock prices were climbing, and the market cap was growing. The only metric businesses worried about during the past decade were shareholder values. That isn't the case today. Corporations are trying to assess the value of that last area of their business that defies easy quantification: their marketing departments.

Sustainable design: What area do you think designers need to prioritise in order to make design more sustainable?
According to Jan R. Stavik, President of 'era05:World Design Congress', one of the chief aims of 'era05' was "to demonstrate in theory and with practical case-studies that user-oriented problem-solving methods, creative training and the attitude of the professional designer can be very useful in the quest for sustainable solutions to the numerous social, economic and organisational problems our societies face." We would like to know which of these areas you think requires the most improvement in the upcoming years.

Creative thinking in interactive design: How can interactive design professionals best avoid the trap of focusing on technical virtuosity to the detriment of creative thinking?
13% By basing the design process on a systematic design brief that is drawn up in partnership with major stakeholders.
20% By sketching out the big picture with technically 'primitive' tools before touching the more sophisticated ones.
70% By beginning the design process with a strategic marketing brainstorming session that precedes the discussion of production methods.
Totals shown may be more or less than 100% due to rounding.

'Make up your mind': Design symposium organised by the Women Designer's Forum from 20>22 October 2006
The process of making decisions is inherent to the process of designing. This is valid from the very first line drawn: designers produce facts on which decisions have to be made – by the designer her- or himself, by their teams, by the client and finally by the market. The design symposium 'Make up your mind' organised by the Women Designer's Forum (df) looks into the daily and specifically design related factors, interconnections, and impacts of decision making. The df allows participants to see behind the curtain by inviting speakers with experiences in design, management and business, the arts and the sciences of communication and sociology. They will shed light on the prevailing aspects of decision making and issues we are not necessarily entirely aware of. The symposium will take place from 20>22 October 2006 at the Zollverein School of Management and Design in Essen, Germany.
