Ministry of Culture in the Slovak Republic announces plan to close down Slovak Design Centre
Members and supporters of the Slovak Design Centre (SDC) recently issued a letter expressing their deep concerns about the Ministry of Culture's surprise decision to close their institution as of 1 January 2006. Because there were no public consultations on this matter previous to the announcement, the Slovak design community is still reeling from its possible repercussions and has launched a call for support from the international design community.
Interview with Icograda Director, Brenda Sanderson, available in Spanish on Venezuelan website for design
Objetual.com, the website for an interdisciplinary Venezuelan design network promoting the professional and academic enhancement of design and the design community in Venezuela, is currently featuring an interview between Jacinto Salcedo, Objectual Visual Communications Editor, and Brenda Sanderson, Icograda Director. Creative thinking in interactive design: How can interactive design professionals best avoid the trap of focusing on technical virtuosity to the detriment of creative thinking?
"The single largest problem that continues to hinder interactive design from really coming into its own is the fact that designers allow their work to be led more by technology or production techniques and not creative thinking." Stephen Gates, Interactive Creative Director for t:m interactive. We would like to know how you think this problem is best addressed.

TypeRadio Interviews from ATypI Conference in Helsinki (15>18 September 2005) now available online
Typeradio sounds like a paradox in terms - type owing its existence to print and radio to speech - but for those seeking to read between and behind the letters, this MicroFM broadcast, MP3 radio stream and podcast station offers a tool that they could use - oddly enough - with their ears. Initiated in 2004 by Underware (Akiem Helming, Bas Jacobs and Sami Kortemaki), a graphic design studio specialising in designing and producing typefaces, and two collaborators DBXL (Donald Beekman) - and LoveLiza (Liza Enebeis), Typeradio.org makes a point of visiting different design events around the world to meet designers and to talk about much more than kerning, point sizes and glyphs.
