A new UNEP guidebook, Communicating Sustainability, is launched in
Costa Rica

A roving 'Environment Train' exhibition in Algeria, a radio series on pesticide pollution in Vietnam and a novel ozone layer awareness campaign in Costa Rica are among sixteen innovative public campaigns featured in a new guidebook from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

The guide, Communicating Sustainability - How to produce effective public campaigns, provides national and local governments with professional advice on how to implement communications campaigns on environment and development issues.

Icograda and Icsid jointly endorse P&G/IDSA's 'The Aging Consumer'

The International Council of Graphic Design Associations (Icograda) and The International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid) have endorsed 'The Aging Consumer', a competition among American and European schools that will enable winners to receive funding for an interdisciplinary project on the theme of serving the aging consumer.

The goal of this competition is to encourage schools to develop interdisciplinary educational models that better prepare students to work in today's integrative business world. The program seeks to foster thinking in terms of building a product's brand architecture during the design process and hopes to sensitize students in an array of disciplines to the issues facing the growing aging population while encouraging them to develop innovative solutions and new perspectives regarding this important social segment.

Galeria: Icograda's International Design Exhibit - Call for
Submissions

Icograda is currently inviting designers, illustrators, and typographers who are members of Icograda Member associations to submit original work for Galeria display on the Icograda website. Selected work will be exhibited for a one week period, accompanied by an appropriate description and information about the creator.

You must be a member of an Icograda Member association to submit work for Galeria. Each Icograda Member association in good standing is issued a unique password to pass on to its members. If you do not know your Member association's acronym or Icograda website password, contact your association's Icograda liaison or executive.

If you have produced graphic design that exhibits original expression, creativity, wit, or effective visual communication, we would love to exhibit it in our Galeria in the form of digital design. Designs for posters, postcards, book jackets, etc. are most suited to this web gallery.

Identity Matters
By Robert L. Peters, FGDC, Canada

"Identity lies at the very core of culture, and it is the key to our understanding of self. Culture encompasses language, traditions, beliefs, morals, laws, social behaviour, and the art of a community. Understanding culture is imperative in avoiding identity crisis and rootlessness - and it's a prerequisite for the effective shaping of identities and communication. Yet, everywhere in our shrinking world, we can witness increased homogenization, erosion of indigenous culture, the emergence of non-places (uniform airports, generic shopping malls), and the advancement of what some theorists are calling 'serial monotony'."

Thus reads an extract from the preface of Robert L. Peters' new book, Worldwide Identity, featuring over 300 identities from 40 Icograda member countries.

Stretching paradigms: What is the best way for a designer to extend his/her vision, understanding and respect?

"A shrinking world (with widened opportunities for graphic designers) calls for extended vision, a broadened understanding of 'the other' and an increased respect for differences.\" In his new book, Worldwide Identity, Robert L. Peters discusses the responsibility of the identity designer to develop cultural sensitivity and open-mindedness. We would like to know how you think this is best done.

Do you agree with Krister Ahlstrom when it comes to the kind of business acumen designers should apply to their design solutions?

60%  Yes. Designers do not have enough of a 'management strategy attitude' and they should.
24%  No. Enough designers do offer strategic considerations when selling their design.
19%  Not relevant. I do not agree that designers should think like corporate managers, anyway, so this question is irrelevant.
