AIGA launches Disaster Relief Task Force to aid designers impacted by Katrina
In the aftermath of Katrina, The American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) has created a Disaster Task Force that will focus on providing assistance to design professional=
s who are directly impacted by the hurricane. AIGA has approximately 250 members living and working in the Gulf Coast Region. It appears that most of these managed to find safety within 600 miles of their homes, but in many instances they have lost their homes, jobs and studios. Hundreds of AIGA members have responded to the plight of these people, offering compassion and contributions.

Identity Matters
By Robert L. Peters, FGDC, Canada
“Identity lies at the very core of culture, and it is the key to our understanding of self. Culture encompasses language, traditions, beliefs, morals, laws, social behaviour, and the art of a community. Understanding culture is imperative in avoiding identity crisis and rootlessness - and it's a prerequisite for the effective shaping of identities and communication. Yet, everywhere in our shrinking world, we can witness increased homogenization, erosion of indigenous culture, the emergence of non-places (uniform airports, generic shopping malls), and the advancement of what some theorists are calling 'serial monotony'.”
Thus reads an extract from the preface of Robert L. Peters’ new book, Worldwide Identity, featuring over 300 identities from 40 Icograda member countries.

Design means business: Do you agree with Krister Ahlstrom when it comes to the kind of business acumen designers should apply to their design solutions?
“Precious few design agencies are able to sell design to companies. They offer aesthetic arguments when they should be emphasizing strategic considerations. Designers need to understand how corporate managers think and to be able to suggest improvements. They do not have a 'management strategy attitude', but an artisan attitude, and industry needs business-minded partners." Krister Ahlstrom, Chairman of the Finnish Design Round Table.
