Icograda Endorses the 22nd International Brno Biennale of Graphic Design 2006
Founded in the same year as Icograda (1963), the Brno International Biennale of Graphic Design is one of the longest running events of its kind in the world. Held every other year in Brno, the second largest city in the Czech Republic, the event features two alternating themes. The first theme, which will be the focus of the 2006 Biennale, includes posters, corporate identity and advertising graphics; while the other theme, to be covered in 2008, includes graphic design and type in books, magazines, newspapers and new media. This year it will be held from 13 June to 15 October 2006 with the deadline for entries being 15 January 2006.

Professional versus ‘Hack’ Design: What distinguishes a professional job from a ‘hack’ job in graphic design?
Some companies with limited marketing budgets often try to enlist someone in-house who does not have professional experience of training to do their graphic design in order to cut costs. We would like to know what factor you think most distinguishes a professional job from this kind of ‘hack’ work.

Wanganui School of Design Launches the Malaysian Alumni Website
A website dedicated to the Malaysian Alumni from Waganui School of Design was launched on 14 August 2005 at the PJ Hilton, Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia. Since there are a huge number of Malaysians that graduate from Wanganui School of Design, Shirly Kaw took it upon herself to create a website to keep these people linked to each other and to the staff at the design school. A very festive gathering of approximately 60 alumni celebrated this launch, paying special hommage to the important influence the Wanganui School of Design has had on Malaysian design.

Typographic Experiments at the St. Bride Conference 10 > 12 October 2005
The St. Bride Conference has always been a typographic forum that is diverse in content, eclectic in spirit, marginal in sympathies, yet international in appeal. Now in its fourth year, each event has built on these aspirations, attracting not only a diverse range of speakers, but also exhibitors who are prepared to experiment and push the boundaries of type. This year is no exception; alongside 30 speakers there are 13 exhibitors each with a unique interpretation on the theme of ‘temporary type’.
Joel Armstrong, a designer and illustrator from Arkansas, will be presenting ‘Its time to address ‘er draws’ an visual, tactile and audio installation inspired by his parents dysfunctional relationship. Two young designers from the UK, Neil Andrews & Andrew Sanders, will be exhibiting ‘Fly post it’: a dynamic and daily changing exhibition located in the stairwells and dark corners of the Conference venue; whilst Diederik Corvers from the Netherlands, will present an installation of type made with sand and water that has been submitted to the Himalayan weather. In her exhibition ‘Traces’, Anna Gerber, a London-based designer, will look at how typographic remnants create their own visual language, rich with snapshots of other stories and memories. In contrast, Izumi Shirantan, a calligrapher from Japan, will focus on the beauty of movements of the lines and spaces that make letters and which lead people to read what is behind the words. Jonathan Aitken from Alberta will present a video, ‘Kinetic typography extends poetic meaning’ presents words of a poem in a dynamic way without the literalism inherent in images; whilst Craig Yamey, from London, blurs the boundaries between graphic design and illustration by using typographic elements in collage. And just for fun, Petra Cern Oven invites delegate to win alphabet cookies by participating in a game of alphabet noughts and crosses, and Agata Wychichowska and Marina Chaccur, invite you to participate in an interactive piece that brings you back to schooldays with chalk, homework and apples for the teacher.
