When the Branding Circus Comes to Town
by Naseem Javed
Pregnant mothers are being pooled to place ads on their round, shiny stomachs as part of "tummy branding." Some argue that this is how news is created. To some, this is "desperate branding" in action. Welcome to "guaranteed-to-fail branding," a process that ensures a top spot on the list of branding failures. These projects are sometimes called "reality branding." There is no limit to these weird processes.

St. Bride Conference Opens Bookings and Announces New Sponsorship Structure
One of the primary motives for the annual St Bride Library Conference is to increase awareness of the Library’s activities within the international type community; the other is to raise funds to support the continuation of this unique, world-class resource.
To encourage industry support both for the Conference and the Library, the Friends of St Bride have introduced a five-tier sponsorship scheme. With levels ranging from Eric Gill Level worth £500, up to William Caxton Level worth £5,000, the Friends are offering potential sponsors not only a range of lucrative exposure opportunities but also a selection of hospitality benefits.
Industry response to the new structure has been positive and many companies and individuals have already been tempted by the tangible benefits offered in return for their support. The Friends of St Bride are delighted to have the backing of so many businesses whose contribution to the 2005 Conference will undoubtedly enhance the event.
Conference bookings are now open.

Typevents Forges Transatlantic Alliance to Celebrate Giants of Prints Past
Typevents LLP is working with a consortium in the US to celebrate the tercentenaries of two giants from Britain and America’s prints past. John Baskerville, printer, paper-maker and type-founder, and his friend and colleague Benjamin Franklin, printer, writer and Founding Father, are both 300 years old in 2006. To commemorate this extraordinary event in typographic history, Typevents plans to pay tribute to Baskerville with a month-long celebration of exhibitions, lectures and an eighteenth century feast in London in the Summer of 2006. Simultaneously, the Benjamin Franklin Tercentenary will be holding a series of Franklin events in the USA, UK and France.
More information will be posted on the Typevents website as the programme evolves.
Planet Propaganda Creates Branding for Wellness
Helping The Relaxation Company and Ellipsis Arts market its musical and spoken recordings to retailers tapping the growing wellness category, Planet Propaganda branded and designed six, new thematic packages including a CD recording, instructional cards and related accessories. The first packages to be released this summer will be a series of three Brain Fitness Kits helping achieve creative inspiration, relaxation and restful sleep.
"We're getting very good feedback on the new, contemporary look and feel of these kits," says Jeff Charno, president of Agog Creative, the parent organization for The Relaxation Company and Ellipsis Arts. He adds, "Planet's most important contribution so far has been our Brain Fitness name and positioning. This is a concept that resonates immediately with consumers. They intuitively know and immediately understand that these kits will help you take care of your brain, just as you would your body."
"We helped re-brand, re-imagine and re-package their recordings as part of an all-inclusive, instructive kit that would appeal to mainstream audiences," continues Greg Wold, Planet's brand manager. "Beyond the package design, we contributed to shaping each kit and its contents from researching appropriate exercises for card decks, to locating aromatherapy scents and to sourcing only ethically manufactured materials."

bounce from Mexico to Moscow, Japan to Jerusalem. It is a diverse programme
that puts Christians next to Jews and juxtaposes politics, protest and religion.
There are a host of typo-exhibitions that include type that can be eaten,
letters that dance, and words that can be puzzled.
