When the Branding Circus Comes to Town
by Naseem Javed
Pregnant mothers are being pooled to place ads on their round, shiny stomachs as part of "tummy branding." Some argue that this is how news is created. To some, this is "desperate branding" in action. Welcome to "guaranteed-to-fail branding," a process that ensures a top spot on the list of branding failures. These projects are sometimes called "reality branding." There is no limit to these weird processes.

Grammar of Communicating, by Iliprandi Lorenzi Pavesi
>From Typeface to Typesetting
Good typesetting is not just the manual or digital operation of physically setting the type, joining sequences of letters of the alphabet together to make up words, sentences, paragraphs and concepts. When we talk about typesetting, we are also talking about how to define and highlight a set of operations that start from the choice of font and arrive at the architecture of the page. The value of the letter as a graphic sign is stated in the first of the manuals, but is revealed more completely in the second, where examples of lettering alternate with simple exercises in typesetting. Exercises, rather than formulae because these manuals are not intended as collections of models to be copied, but as simple examples in practice of a method of typesetting whose applications are potentially far more extensive.

4th Annual St Bride Conference

The Conference promises to be something of a typographic jamboree with a
heady mixture of talks that cover life, death, sex and money, and which
bounce from Mexico to Moscow, Japan to Jerusalem. It is a diverse programme
that puts Christians next to Jews and juxtaposes politics, protest and religion.
There are a host of typo-exhibitions that include type that can be eaten,
letters that dance, and words that can be puzzled.
26 > 28 October 2005
Conference
This international design conference will be held at the University
Iberoamericana (Campus Mexico City). Its aim is to bring together ideas
from the entire design community (professionals, researchers, educators,
graduate students, etc.) in order to explore, visualize, argue and draw the
possible future of design. It is an open forum for designers from all
disciplines (industrial, textile, graphic, new media).
