Design Achievers: Great ideas from young designers

A school bag that doubles up as a desk, a flask that keeps breast milk
fresh for up to ten hours, a board game to make children environmentally
aware, a candle that will not fall over - these are just some of the ideas
with which 19 design students from all over South Africa came up to help
solve a South African problem.

The students took part in the annual Design Achievers Award scheme, hosted
by the SABS Design Institute. This four-day workshop was aimed at developing
design leadership amongst young designers and culminated in an awards
function on 16 June, Youth Day. The guest speaker at this event was Dr Pallo Jordan,
Minister of Arts and Culture.

Is Your Brand Identity Worth Billions?
By Naseem Javed

Is your brand valuation worth a billion dollars today? Maybe yes or
maybe no, but it surely is worth something pretty big. At the end of
the day, all the work you have put in pushing your name identity and
your range of products and services in your marketplace adds up in
an abstract space of the consumer's mind, where it acquires some
great value.

Where does gender play a role in design?

73%  The design consumer.
Gender is a key consideration in who your design audience will be.
15%  The design creation.
Gender informs the design process and influences its outcome.
15%  The design evaluation.
Juries should have proportionate representation of both genders.

Design Cares Exhibit in Bahrain

Inspired by the Design Cares Web site ( http://www.designcares.com ),
the Graphic Designers of Canada's Vancouver Island Chapter created
the Design Cares Exhibit and Forum (with generous support from Sappi
and Adobe). The resulting exhibit of posters from the juried show
celebrates the role designers are taking in helping to improve the
world. This July the exhibit finds its way to Bahrain, where it will
be on display starting July 9 at the Creative Nights conference.

Women in Design: A Fact Finding Initiative

Icograda and Icsid are constantly searching for ways in which to retain
and increase our relevance and impact in an ever-changing world that
is driven by technology. To address this challenge and explore potential
opportunities, this joint project was launched as an exploratory fact-finding
mission into Women in Design.

The feedback received will be used to enable the Women in Design initiative
to more accurately focus future projects of relevance to women in design
and to add value to the general member base. We believe that individual
member societies will also find value in the final feedback as it might assist
them in developing appropriate strategies when arranging conferences,
interventions and events.

Organizational Survey (http://www.icograda.org/web/survey-org.shtml)
This fact-finding sheet aims at capturing information from Icograda mem= ber
associations, and should be completed by the secretariat or a person appointed
by the secretariat to do so.

Members Survey (http://www.icograda.org/web/survey-members.shtml)
This fact-finding sheet aims to collect information from Icograda member
association’s members and should be completed by individuals,
both men and women.

ATypI to honour Matthew Carter at Helsinki Conference

For 50 years Matthew Carter has been designing type, cutting punches,
teaching typography and writing about the graphic arts. Initially trained
as a punch-cutter at Enschedé, Carter was later responsible for Crosfield’s
typographic programme; worked as Linotype’s in-house designer 1965–1981;
co-founded Bitstream in 1981, and Carter & Cone in 1991. Responsible for
the design of numerous typefaces, Carter’s most ubiquitous fonts include
Verdana and Georgia for Microsoft.

To celebrate Carter’s remarkable career, the Association Typographique
Internationale (ATypI) has chosen its annual Conference as the venue at
which to honour his work. Margaret Re, curator of an ambitious exhibition
of Carter’s type designs and editor of the book, Typographically Speaking- the
art of Matthew Carter
, will present a retrospective lecture on his career, after
which there will be a short ceremony and presentation commemorating
Carter’s contribution to typography and his commitment to ATypI.
