What’s the UK’s favourite design?
The New Designers exhibition is setting out to find the UK’s favourite piece of design created by a British designer during the last 20 years. The winner of the New Designers poll will be announced at the New Designers event in London on 30 June 2005 when the exhibition opens to showcase inspiring work by this year’s crop of graduate designers. Some of Britain’s most respected design commentators have been invited to nominate their favourite project - it could be an outstanding piece of British design from a range of creative industries including architecture, jewellery, graphic design and fashion.

Women in Design: A Fact Finding Initiative
Icograda and Icsid are constantly searching for ways in which to retain and increase our relevance and impact in an ever-changing world that is driven by technology. To address this challenge and explore potential opportunities, this joint project was launched as an exploratory fact-finding mission into Women in Design.
The feedback received will be used to enable the Women in Design initiative to more accurately focus future projects of relevance to women in design and to add value to the general member base. We believe that individual member societies will also find value in the final feedback as it might assist them in developing appropriate strategies when arranging conferences, interventions and events.

Give me a sign!
Our everyday lives are guided and made easier by signs. How would we find our way from point A to point B without the aid of road signs? How would we distinguish companies without signs that give them a unique corporate identity?
Signage gives everything a name and directs people in a lot of what they do. Undoubtedly, signs form a crucial communication tool in our lives today. In people’s busy lives one-on-one communication is becoming increasingly rare and signs make brief communicative interludes possible.

JAGDA Poster Exhibition: WATER FOR LIFE
Japan Graphic Designers Association Inc. (JAGDA) has launched a new exhibit=
ion titled JAGDA Poster Exhibition: WATER FOR LIFE. JAGDA initiated the JAGDA Peace Poster Exhibition in 1983 as a way of promoting peace through the medium of the poster. Since then it has continued, both in Japan and overseas, to hold exhibitions of posters with a message created by association members under themes including peace, the environment, World Heritage and Japan, and these events have enjoyed an enormous response.
This year water was chosen as the theme for the JAGDA Poster Exhibition: WATER FOR LIFE. Water is an indispensable source of life for all and every creature existing on this planet. Although people’s awareness of environmental issues has clearly increased in recent years, damage caused by drought and severe flooding due to progressing global warming and extreme climate has become further aggravated worldwide. Water issues are now facing a crucial challenge.

Masters of Editorialism
By Max Bruinsma
Last year, the Dean of the Utrecht Graduate School of Visual Arts and Design, Dr. Henk Slager, asked Max Bruinsma to rethink the educational considerations for the graduate course of Editorial Design, and re-write its course plan. In this short essay Max Bruinsma summarizes his view on the discipline and outlines the principles on which the new course, which will start Septemb=

16th International Poster Festival of Chaumont Catalogue
The bilingual catalogue (French / English) of the 16th International Poster Festival of Chaumont (France) is available in bookstores this year again.
Chaumont pursues its exploration of the stakes of contemporary graphic design: The Festival shows up a large selection of works by the modernist master A.M. Cassandre, the recent creations of French graphic designer Christophe Jacquet dit Toffe and offers the Dutch school WerkplaatsTypografie to invest the Festival. Among the 1800 posters received for the International Poster Competition, which are now part of a collection of more than 20 000 pieces, 100 posters have been selected to be shown in this catalogue.
The festival also presents a graphic manipulation of the historical poster =
collection Dutailly by the young Amsterdam-based designer Harmen Liemburg.
The “À-ce-qu’on-dit”, usual phrases by David Poullard invest and question the public space.

Lest We Forget: Canadian Designers on War
Edmonton, Canada
24 June > 6 July 2005
War has long been the subject of the arts and within this genre posters have been important vehicles for communication. Posters are used to arouse public opinion. They reflect changes in attitudes, political trends and social issues. They are advertisements and sources of information. In short, posters are a record of the time.
Designers have used their talents to rally both for and against war to create powerful graphic statements. This year, marks the 60th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and a world which is still witness to armed conflict Lest We Forget: Canadian Designers on War features the responses of 24 prominent Canadian graphic designers to the subjects of war, anti-war and peace. This show challenges viewers to think differently and perhaps act differently.

Paper War: Nazi propaganda in one battle, on a single day, Cassino, Italy, May 11, 1944
Propaganda is a weapon. It is graphic design’s most sinister manifestation, made to change perceptions, destroy morale and dominate culture. For five brutal months in 1944, the town of Cassino, Italy blocked the Allied path to Rome. Three major offensives had faile=
d to oust the Germans, who had hunkered down behind the toppled walls of the ancient monastery of St. Benedict. On May 11, the Allies launched their final offensive. In the eerie pre-battle silence, a single soldier gathered 14 different German propaganda leaflets. Fired by mortar across the Rapido River, every leaflet carried a carefully honed message written and illustrated to appeal to the cultural and political identities of the respective Allied factions. Employing incisive typography and vivid red and black illustrations printed in four languages, the leaflets enumerated reasons for the Allies to surrender to the Germans.
A fascinating book detailing one of the final efforts of Hitler's propaganda machine, targeting
multicultural Allied forces on the battlefield and in their own languages.
