Brenda Sanderson Appointed New Icograda Director

In January 2005, the International Council of Graphic Design Associations (Icograda) and the International Council of Societies of Industrial Designers (ICSID) took a historical step by moving their headquarters to Montreal, Canada. This will open new opportunities for their development and mutual collaboration. Since Thierry Van Kerm who has been the Icograda Director since June 1999 decided not to relocate to Montreal, the Icograda Board appointed a new Director, Brenda Sanderson who will enter her function on 7 March 2005.

Education Now
By Zalma Jalluf

Culture is an act of design, of preservation of our heritage and of the development of collective memory, a dynamic event of identity. In recent years a surprising social demand for cultural rights has developed to fulfil the need for a varied and individual subsistence, rights as strong as the right to health and food. However, what chronic lacks are these demands expressing? What are we demanding when we demand culture? Who is equipped to perceive culture as a right?

Do you feel your business is doing better, the same or worse than three months ago?

From the previous weeks, it appears that a great majority of graphic designers do not protect their design. Nevertheless, some do.

In case you do protect your design, you protect them:
  • Only by copyright: 83%
  • by registering them as 'trade marks': 12%
  • by registering them as 'designs' (The outward appearance of a product or part of it which results from the lines, contours, colour, shape, texture, materials and its ornamentation): 9%

Totals shown may be more or less than 100% due to rounding.

Pyro Stdio Calls for Art Director
Spain
http://www.pyrostudios.com/

Pyro Studios is currently accepting Art Director applicants for its dynamic studio located in Madrid, Spain. The Art Director is responsible for defining the overall artistic vision, direction and style of the project. Using the Game Design Document, and in partnership with the Producer and other senior creative staff, you will interpret the vision for the game into a unique visual experience. Once defined, your role will be to clearly communicate that vision to a team of 45 artists and leads and drive the art team to meet the visual standards of excellence you have set.

The title you will be working on will be shipped on next-gen consoles, meaning that the quality and standards for art on the new Sony & Microsoft hardware will be beyond anything seen to date. We are looking for someone who can help us raise the bar and set a visual standard that will leave the competition awestruck.

>From the 8th to the 11th of March, Madrid welcomes an international summit on ‘Democracy and Terrorism,’ in honour of the first anniversary of 11 March. The organisers of the ‘Bad News’ project would like  to take advantage of this international event so that  designers from different countries and cultures contribute their views and personal opinions regarding this subject. They have created a virtual gallery and would like to display in different spaces throughout the city with all the works that they receive.

Bad News/Design for Solidarity hopes to be a symbol for international solidarity against terrorism. For this organisers need for designers from all over the world to contribute with their creativity and talent.

This exhibition at Design Forum presents 52 statements related to Design Year 2005. In this exhibition, designers and artists of the Ornamo Association tell of their own thoughts and work. The statement of a designer can be provocative or aggressive, but also something stemming from quiet everyday work. The result is a polyphony of ideas created by designers and reflecting different perspectives that we hope will also arouse discussion among the public.
