Citizen Design - Social Issues in Design
W: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/citizendesign/

This is a forum for designers, design educators, design students and those from affiliated fields. Design is never completely neutral. Both good and bad design make a difference (or cause problems). By exchanging ideas the organisers of this discussion forum hope to explore the fundamental underpinnings of what makes graphic design, 2D design and other cross over areas of design like signage and digital media - an important conveyer of political, social, or cultural change. How is design a means of political and social communication?

How can design meet the needs of business when the economy remains fickle, lacks direction, and resources remain scarce? Finding an answer to this difficult question presents a serious challenge. We all know and respect organizations that do it all right. We admire how good design has touched everything they do, how they always seem to know where they are headed, and find opportunities in the latest technology and/or use it effectively. These questions and thoughts have come from many different sources and have guided us in developing this conference.

Now more than ever, effective design depends on establishing emotional connections with customers and delving into the corporate soul. In addition to the conference, delegates are invited to a colloquium on professional accreditation for graphic designers, based on the experiences of RGD Ontario. The Association grants graphic designers who qualify the right to use the designations Registered Graphic Designer and RGD, a quality signal denoting attainment of the standards required for professional competency.
