Oriental Style
by Jun-Liang Chen, TPDA, Taiwan
If the world is windless,
ocean, mountains, cities, people and hearts,
would remain stillness.
Only when the wind starts to blow,
No matter it comes from east, west, south or north,
The nature would then be experienced,
and thus the humanity would exist.

Cause and Effect: Why now, more than ever, the non-profit world needs design and vice versa
by DK Holland
America is crass commercialism: that’s the message that is reflected on the streets and in the media these days. But what’s in our soul? I think wistfully of bygone years when the standard for non-profit design was higher: I think of the brilliantly clever and totally graphic non-profit ad campaigns of the Ad Council of a few decades ago. ‘A mind is a terrible thing to waste’ and ‘This is your mind on drugs’ come immediately to mind. And I conjure up the innumerable and much inspiring non-profit identities that revered designers Chermayeff and Geismar crafted in years past. These were forms of expression that made you proud to be an American designer - made you want to step up to the plate and volunteer your talent for a cause.

Do you feel your business is doing better, the same or worse than three months ago?
As we want to keep track of the changes in the practice and your forecasts for the times to come, we are repeating this question every few months in trying to establish the flow of trends and other issues regarding graphic design.

Do you work in Advertising?
As we want to know more about the practice of designers worldwide and their opinion of different aspects of the practice, we asked you how many of you work in Advertising.
A surprisingly small number of designers (just 8 percent) work in Advertising on a regular basis, whereas another 13 percent of do it on occasional basis. A great percentage of 79 percent stated they never work in Advertising.
Do you work in Advertising?
All the time 8%
Just on occasional projects 13%
Never 79%

Poster Collection no. 4 - Hors-Sol - Poster Actions in Switzerland

ISBN 3-907078-54-3

E: dopfer@springer.de
Hors-Sol is a record of poster actions conducted by fine artists in public spaces in Switzerland, starting with the sensational campaign mounted by the Zurich Concrete artists in 1961. The poster is usually a medium for commercial messages, but here it is used to convey new meanings, some of which are more firmly anchored in the context of art, others explicitly aimed at advertising.
