Gasp Magazine
by Mary-Lynn Bellamy-Willms, GDC, Canada
Strong imagery and forceful text are used to inform young teens about the dangers of smoking. Graphic photographs, bold colours, vibrant type and engaging illustrations have made this magazine extremely popular with its target audience - although parents are sometimes shocked at the graphic nature of the photographs.

A Year Without Clients
By Jeff Carlson
Taking short breaks is good for your creativity—not to mention your sanity—but what if you were to extend that break? Not just by a couple of hours, a few days, or even a week, though. What if you took an entire year off?

Why are you dissatisfied with your Art director?
As we found out so far, over a half of you seem to be unhappy about your collaboration with your Art director. We tried to ascertain possible reasons for your dissatisfaction.
Possible issues can be numerous and individual so we could not have attempted to list them all here, but we listed a few most likely to hit the mark. According to your answers, over a half of you (57 percent) think it is the Clients’ unreasonable requests that their Art directors have to insists upon that make them unhappy. 36 percent of you stated it has to do with Art director's inadequate understanding of design in general, and a mere 7 percent said that their Art director has ideas they disagree with. According to this, most Art directors seem to be in the hot seat trying to reach a compromise between Clients and Designers.
Why are you dissatisfied with your Art director?
Art director's inadequate understanding of design in general 36%
He/She has ideas I do not agree with so my creativity suffers 7%
Clients' unreasonable requests that my Art director insists upon 57%

Call for volunteers
E: dw@designfortheworld.org
Design for the World was created by ICOGRADA, IFI and ICSID, with the support of the Barcelona Design Center, to offer the competence and voluntary commitment of professional designers to organisations working for people in need. One of Design for the World’s partner organisations, a major international humanitarian non-governmental organisation, has been developing over the last years a software package to assist in the management of logistics in relief and development projects. They are interested in getting the opinion of professionals on its user interface: clarity, userfriendliness,...
If you are a designer who has already been working in this field, and you are willing to spend some of your time to analyze this package and give some advice, please get in touch with Design for the World by e-mail dbogaert@designfortheworld.org.
