Design Without Borders is the underlying theme for the second GDC Environs Conference. North Americans' eyes are opening to the dangers of ignoring our colleagues, denying the interconnection of the world's communities, and not acknowledging our differences. How does this involve you as a designer? As communication architects we continually graze on cultural icons, vernacular imagery and unique languages peeling back veneers to create new symbols or polishing surfaces to renew long lost ideals.

The Real (Design) World
by Darin Painter
This is the true story of four young designers, who graduated from school and started looking for work, only to learn what happens when the job market stops being nice and starts getting real.

How important is financial security in terms of your work-motivation?
We wanted to know how you rated the importance of money to your motivation.
The majority of 66 percent regards financial security as very important in terms of their work-motivation. It is not surprising, as the absence of financial concerns allows one to pay more attention to the project. 20 percent of you find it to be helpful at times, while just 14 percent of you find the project itself to be the major motivator, regardless of the financial awards attached to it.
How important is financial security in terms of your work-motivation?
Very, it creates a stress-free zone 66%
It sometimes helps 20%
The less money I have, the more motivated I am 14%

Ikko Tanaka Passed Away on Thursday, 10th January 2002. Mr. Ikko Tanaka, a JAGDA director, passed away of acute heart failure at Keio Hospital in Tokyo on Thursday 10th January, at the age of 71. As one of the founder members and directors of JAGDA since its establishment in 1978 (Vice President for 1994-1999), Mr. Tanaka contributed profoundly to the development of the association. The whole creative industry in Japan was struck with this sad and sudden news. His funeral was held on Wednesday, 16th January, which was attended by many that mourned over Mr. Tanaka's loss.

Professional Accreditation: The International Perspective
Communication Arts Magazine
In its January/February 2002 (number 310) issue, Communication Arts magazine published an interesting article entitled "Professional Accreditation: The International Perspective" written by Ellen Shapiro. In it, she provides a sampling of responses on the subject from Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Mexico, The Netherlands, South Africa, Turkey and the USA. All but two of the respondents are past or current Icograda board members (three past presidents of Icograda), or the current heads of Icograda member associations! It is great to see the range of opinions expressed, and the valuable "multi-eye perspective" that viewpoints from around the globe provide.
