The Design Business, Education and Preparing for the Future
by Linda Cooper Bowen

Graphic design is not only a calling, it's a business. And as the practice becomes increasingly complex -with more designers moving online to engage in interactive design, marketing, branding and strategic planning- design educators are struggling to define what a viable design education really is. Graduates are up on the latest technical developments and stylistic trends but often lack effective marketing, business management and communication skills which are vital for success in any profession.

Heijdens Karwei awarded funding for cause related campaign
W: http://www.heijdenskarwei.com

Heijdens Karwei has been awarded a substantial grant for its creative campaign, U Man Write, for Amnesty International.  The campaign was launched in January in Club Baby in Amsterdam.
Heijdens Karwei from Amsterdam was selected from over 400 applicants from across the international design community and was one of 23 to receive a grant to fund the implementation of a creative campaign that promotes their chosen worthy cause.  The initiative, ideas that matter, was launched last year by international paper manufacturer, Sappi to encourage designers to donate their time and skills for the benefit of society. Sappi commits $1 million USD annually to this highly worthwhile initiative.

Emergence
France
P: Pyramid Editions
ISSN: 1254-7298
C: Veronique Marrier
E: vmarrier@pyramid.fr
Published by the publisher of Etapes Graphiques, Emergence presents 31 young French graphic designers selected by Michel Wlassikov, in various fields: print, typography, photography, multimedia, packaging, signs,...
Michel Wlassikoff: Remarkable changes have taken place, concerning the practice of graphic design, as well as its position within the communication systems and even its recognition by the other visual disciplines and cultural institutions. (...) It seemed to me that to fully understand the paradoxes of this practice and define its exact value, the research had to focus on a small selection of French freelance graphic designers. (...) They all make up a kind of laboratory where the new images [not equal] printed or on screen [not equal] are developed. This is thus a panorama meant to be the most representative possible of the trends and processes, the intervention methods and the specializations, the ways and lives of designers, even their financial and geographical positions, through thirty-one studios and individual designers. Each one of them has answered a long questionnaire, the result of which is retranscribed here as a report of the general state of mind.
