Sappi and Icograda Join Forces
to Raise the Standards of Graphic Design
Following the sponsorship of the Icograda Design Seminar in London, Sappi, the world's leading coated fine paper producer, is now an official sponsoring partner of Icograda, the International Council for Graphic Design Associations. This partnership begins with an initial commitment for two years and coincides with the Sappi World Design Convergence, a mega event that includes the Icograda Congress, to be held in Johannesburg, South Africa, in September later this year.
"We are proud to have Sappi as our official partner and to be associated with the paper manufacturing expertise and product innovation that this company represents," says Icograda president David Grossman. "Icograda's membership is growing at a rapid pace and is reaching all regions. The international community of graphic designers is becoming far more inter-connected and active. Partnering with an international leader like Sappi is a perfect choice for us."

Corporate Identities
By Hoet and Hoet
Founded in 1989, Hoet et Hoet is a Belgian graphic design agency with an emphasis on creativity. The studio built its development on its client's fidelity which comes from relationships based on dialogue, mutual confidence and respect.
"We think a work is good only if you want it. And to want it, you need common values and objectives."

Corporate Relations
By Sara Curtis, editor Applied Arts magazine
Applied Arts interviewed four corporate communications professionalsãmajor purchasers of design services in this countryãabout their thoughts on the designer/client relationship: How often do they look for a new designer? How do they identify potential new firms? What do they look for in a designer? What is their review process like? Would they ever hire a design shop of, say, only a few people? Would they consider a designer who had never done the type of design they're looking for? What do they look for in a presentation to them? Once they start designing, how does the process go? At the first presentation, do they like to see several potential solutions to a project? Have they had any really bad or really good experiences with designers that they'd like to share?...

A Renewed Vision of Literacy
UNESCO consultation with civil society for United Nations Literacy Decade (March 2001)
In December 1999, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted a resolution to consider proclaiming a United Nations Literacy Decade within the global efforts for Education for All. This initiative was endorsed by participants at a special panel during the World Education Forum (Dakar, April 2000) and reiterated at the UN General Assembly Special Session Session on the implementation of the World Summit for Social Development (Geneva, June 2000). Under this proposed UN Literacy Decade, UNESCO advocates a "renewed vision of literacy" and Literacy for All: children, young people and adults, in and out of school.

Information Anxiety 2
By Richard Saul Wurman
Publisher: Que
ISBN: 0-7897-2410-3
W: http://www.informationanxiety.com
Richard Saul Wurman gives clarity to confusion with new maps for navigating through a stream of bytes which leave us inundated with data but starved for the tools and patterns that give them meaning. In reality there has not been an information explosion, but rather an explosion of non-information, or stuff that simply doesn't inform.

The educational approach of the Institute invites students to project themselves towards the future, to keep an open eye on the demands of the creative and industrial world. Experimental research should therefore be closely linked to the constraints of economic reality, while integrating the constantly changing cultural and technical factors.
Each year, the Institute offers a one year grant to students or professionals who wish to pursue research in these areas.
