Brief: To promote the X-Games -- a TV series of extreme sports played by adrenaline junkies.
Solution: Given the extreme, almost aggressive nature of the X-Games as well as its participants and viewers, the ad needed to be very [greater equal]in-your-face[less equal] and to err on the side of aggressive.

Local is Lekker*: The South African design stew
by Jacques Lange
Africa is not generally perceived as a global centre of significant design activity. However, for those in the know, South Africa is a vibrant laboratory of experimentation and innovation. Graphic design in South Africa is not just alive and well -- it is vibrant and increasingly becoming globally competitive and locally more representative. In September 2001, South African designers will share their experiences and knowledge with their international peers when they will host the first ever world congress of the International Council of Graphic Design Associations (Icograda) on African soil.

How do you manage a stubborn client?
According to our previous results, we all have clients that seem to have poor understanding of design. Sometimes they do not understand even their own needs but insist on a wrong approach, even when you present them with an obviously good solution. How do you manage?

How would you rate your clients' understanding of design?
We have asked you if your clients have a good understanding of what design is about. Or if you have to educate them all the time in order to be able to do your job properly.
This result made our hearts sink. 84 percent of our respective clients have a poor understanding of design! The problem seems to be the same everywhere around the world. It certainly means designers and design associations have a lot of work ahead of themselves to educate the clients.
How would you rate your clients' understanding of design?
Poor 84%
Fairly good 12%
Great 4%
