Five African Designers Benefit from Icograda Foundation Scholarships

On July 3, the Icograda Foundation announced the list of recipients of its biennial scholarships for 2001. The aim of the scholarship scheme is to assist deserving young designers to attend Icograda Congresses. This year the Icograda Foundation offered £1,000 on behalf of the Marika Singer and Viviana Iliprandi Memorial Funds, and Design South Africa contributed an additional sponsorship of two free congress registrations to ensure that more individuals benefit from this worthy scheme.

The Speed Way
The evolution and current trends of type in motion
by David Earls

When the first moveable type printing presses arrived hundreds of years ago, it revolutionised the way in which information was presented and distributed to the public. From the days of daubing on walls, carving glyphs in stone, and writing on papyrus, typography had evolved in an organic fashion, with the method of production deeply embedded in a glyph's style.

Do you have trouble getting paid for your work?
We seem to hear the same complaint from designers all the time. Some of our clients obviously do not understand that the benefits need to go both ways in order to achieve a successful collaboration. Sometimes they even disappear after the work is done. Do you have to play hide-and-seek with your clients come the pay-check time?

Give your opinion and vote at http://www.icograda.org

What is your clients' profile?
With the modern wonders of technology making it possible to work for a Client virtually anywhere in the world, we wanted to see what kind of clients do you most work for.

It seems that most of designers still prefer working for a local client, and then expand nationally. It is a natural progression, however, although surprising given the Internet advantages. It will be interesting to ask the same question in a year's time and compare the results.

What is your clients' profile?
local 54%
national 31%
international 18%
