World's top designers to speak at  Icograda Continental Shift Congress

"After much talking, the waving of arms into late nights, there remains the opportunity to discover the roots of our people and their energy in the unquestioned magic of this ancient continent"' Thabo Mbeki, President of the Republic of South Africa.

The 2001 Icograda Congress in South Africa will be a time of celebration - a celebration of the goodness of life and existence, a celebration of the ordinary and the extraordinary, a celebration of the power of creation, and lastly, a celebration of the possible future and influences of design.

An impressive list of prominent international designers, academics and business strategists will be joined by local industry leaders, who will set the scene at the Continental Shift 2001 Icograda Congress. Fourteen African and fourteen international speakers have been invited, representing all corners of the world:

Sappi World Design Convergence Scholarship Programme

Design South Africa has initiated a scholarship programme to encourage participation by deserving candidates who are unable to source funding for participation in Sappi World Design Convergence and the Icograda and IFI congresses. The programme was launched when DSA offered to sponsor two congress registrations, followed by the Icograda Foundation who donated £1,000 on behalf of the Marika Singer and Viviana Iliprandi Memorial Funds, to support five young South African and Zimbabwean designers to attend the events.

Design South Africa has now formed a partnership with the Design Education Forum of Southern Africa to identify other deserving candidates from the secondary and tertiary education sectors who will benefit from this important scholarship scheme.

After August 15, 2001: Accommodation "subject to availability"...

The registration form says that registration to Icograda Continental Shift Congress closes on 15 August. Although the organisers agreed to slightly postpone this deadline, they highlight that accommodation is now "subject to availability". Therefore, we would suggest that people who intend to attend this event confirm their registration as soon as possible to ensure their accomodation.

Ten Reflections on the Poster
An ever contemporary visual support

Within the framework of the visual disciplines, the poster falls within the sphere of design. As a public expression, it is part of our daily aesthetics. Nevertheless, the explosion of new technologies has unleashed the widespread belief that there is not much hope of survival for the poster in our day and age.

How often do you encounter the prices being lowered below any professional standards?
One reason why the official price lists often become unrealistic is that there are some designers who dunk their prices below these professional standards, and this causes the prices to go lower and lower all the time. In short term, it might help land a job, but, in the long-term, it pushes designers into jeopardy. If this were to come about, we might all end up working for peanuts, and even then someone will ask for a peanut less....

What do you do when you don't get paid?
Following our previous question about your possible problems with payment, now we wanted to know what methods you resort to in case the client's side of agreement is not honoured by their payment.

Almost a quarter find it necessary to iron out the trouble by seeking legal assistance without further ado, but virtually a half try and reason with the offending party by bargaining and/or haggling. Perhaps a bit demoralising fact is that a whole third of you are so distressed that the state you are put in makes you give up on what rightfully should be your reward.

What do you do when you don't get paid?
I take it to my lawyer and file a law-suit 23%
I talk to the client trying to bargain for the fee 45%
I argue for a while and eventually give up 32%

Shigeo Fukuda, President, Japan Graphic Designers Association: "Millennium" fever is now an archaism, the relic of a previous century. This newly completed volume of Graphic Design in Japan 2001 is a compendium of deep significance, both as a survey of graphic creative activity during the last year of the 20th century and as the Japan Graphic Designers Association's first milestone set in an all-new century. Every page of this volume is filled with works reflecting the creative zeal of their designerss, works collectively demonstrating the rich diversity of JAGDA's members and their world-class talents.
