Towards the XIX Compasso d'Oro
On Monday, 10 September, at 6.00 p.m., the Milan Triennale is to be the venue for the presentation of the volume ADI Design Index 2000, the book that presents the best Italian products - in terms of form and of function - to have been launched on the market in the year 2000.
With 350 full-colour pages, a bilingual text in English and Italian and more than 250 illustrations, the volume photographs the latest trends in Italian design, developing its theme with the aid of specialists in the various fields and two important introductory essays, by Michael Erlhoff and Deyan Sudjic. The volume is further enriched by a special section focusing on the theoretical work and research projects into design undertaken in the period from 1998 to 2000.

Legal font protection: Germany takes the lead
Visual Arts Trends staff report
Typography remains the one industry that does not enjoy the benefits of copyright protection. However, European countries are beginning to make progress in this area, spearheaded by the efforts of Germany's Linotype.

How should price lists of design associations be organized?
In trying to organise a price list by an association, a discussion is often raised as to whether the prices be organised by counting hours, by estimating the price for a specific project type, or simply trying establish a minimal professional standard below which no professional designer should work.

How do you calculate your prices?
We inquired about the fashion in which you set your prices. The options offered took into account the most obvious practice that the designers has at his/her disposal.
More than a half resorts to the most individual method which calculates the expenses made and hourly rate. Over a quarter of you, however, seems to find a way in creating a price according to the colleagues' charges, which may or may not be fairer. Finally, a small minority is apparently quite content to use their design association's price list as the evaluation of their work..
How do you calculate your prices?
By calculating my expenses and my hourly rate 57%
By comparing what my colleagues charge and then making an estimate 28%
According to a price list provided by my design association 15%
