Ancillary Events At Sappi World Design Convergence 2001
Sappi World Design Convergence will not be limited to congresses and discussions. A wealth of knowledge about Africa has emerged in recent years and there are many languages, cultures and histories on the African continent that delegates are encouraged to explore. Several curated, exhibitions, workshops and excursions will be available to delegates during the course of Sappi World Design Convergence. These events will take place in greater Johannesburg and Pretoria regions, and will offer delegates many opportunities to engage with different cultural and societal topics.

Mandazi
Kareen Kadhumba, GRAZI, Zimbabwe
Bakesure manufactures flour and baking products. Mandazi was a new product launched on the local and regional market. The product was intended to encourage entrepeneurship by baking and selling the doughnuts (fatkoek).

Does graphic design cross cultural barriers?
Some graphic designers' work appears to represent the specific feeling and thought of the place the author comes from. Others, however, seek for more universal approach, something recognisable irrespectively of their origin. Is good graphic design acknowledged everywhere?

How useful do you find price lists provided by design associations?
We wanted to know if you considered official price lists a valuable points of reference or an idealistic picture of the design market which has nothing to do with reality.
Only a low percentage of designers finds price lists provided by design associations a useful assistance and resorts to them regularly. The majority is divided between a complete reluctance to use them and the occasional usage. It seems that design associations need to rethink the concept of the official price lists in order to make them more useful to their members.
How useful do you find price lists provided by design associations?
Extremely useful, I use them a lot 17%
Partly useful, but not always realistic 41%
A nice idea but has nothing to do with the real situation on the market 42%

International Book Committee reconsidering its future
Due to the decline of interest in IBC by its members, IBC is now reconsidering its future, questioning on the relevance of the organisation itself. Should the IBC continue to function with it's present mission and structure? Should the IBC be dissolved? Or should new forms of cooperation be developed? These are the questions IBC Members will have to face at the next Plenary Session on October 13, 2001 at the Frankfurt Fair.

The End of Open Commercial Competition?
In September WIPO members states decided that a new logo should be found to better represent the vision and work of the Organisation. They ran a competition which was open to graphic designers in any of WIPO's 177 members states. As a result, WIPO awarded three third prizes to designs from three different countries, noting that none of the 784 entries received from 58 countries in the competition met the necessary criteria to serve as a new logo for WIPO. Are designers internationally uncompetent or more realistically highlighted this experience the unrelevance of the procedure put into place to run such a competition?

Communication in the computer age continues to immutably alter the way we visually define ourselves and dramatically affect the content and quality of our cultural by-products. As we make way for the "new," traditions are lost and customs crumble beneath the immense weight of the technocratic juggernault. In the fallout of the subsequent assoault by self-made iMac designers, the appreciation of craft remains the greatest casualty. However, technology has not always resulted in aesthetic atrocities. In the case of mid-century American popular culture it proved to be an invaluable agent for change. This issue of Hous explores a few of these social catalysts and their indelible effects on our environment.
