Over the Fence
An Icograda Design Perspectives Seminar

A Worldwide Perspective on Graphic Design!
On 13 June 2001, Icograda launched in Cuba a new series of Seminar titled Design Perspectives. The objective of these seminars is to give a truly worldwide perspective on graphic design. On November 29, 2001, lecturers from China, Israel, Denmark, South Africa, Malaysia and United Kingdom will give designers a wonderful opportunity to look over the fence.

A wide spectrum of approaches
The theme of the Seminar in Melbourne will be "Over the Fence". Designers will question and answer what does sustainability mean and how does it relate to visual communication (Sustainability and Visual Communication) in an open-minding lecture by Karen Blincoe (Denmark); make the plunge in the breathtaking South African graphic design style (Pursuing an appropriate vernacular visual language: South Africa's colourful journey to establish a rainbow nation through design), by Jacques Lange, (South Africa); accompany Professor Yu Bingnan, (China) for a wonderful journey through Chinese graphic design (An overview of Chinese Graphic Design); discover Southeast Asia, one of the world's original multicultural melting pots, with William-Harald Wong (Malaysia) (Graphic Design at the Cultural Crossroads of Southeast Asia); face a redefinition of Graphic Design (Why is that milk carton talking to me?), an intriguing and inspiring lecture by David Grossman (Israel) and finally, follow the paths of a founder-designer of Pentagram, Mervyn Kurlansky (United Kingdom) (Influences and Obsessions).
Last but not least, thanks to the support of RMIT University and the collaboration of the Australian Graphic Design Association (AGDA) and the Design Institute of Australia (DIA), this outstanding seminar will be free of charge!

Anti Tobacco
Gokmen Saban Karci, AGDA Australia

The poster was created in protest of international Tobacco Industries. The idea is to begin a global action against Tobacco industries continuing to produce a product  which they know kills people.

Present and correct
By Justine Bothwick

In a competitive climate it's not just creativity and credentials that matter, but how you communicate them to prospective clients. Justine Bothwick spoke to four consultancies about presentation techniques, and found that there's more to the pitch than PowerPoint.

Does graphic design receive a positive feedback within the artistic environment in your country?
Design is a child of Art, but many artists today consider designers to be more business people rather than fellow applied artists.

F R O M   P R E V I O U S   O P I N I O N

How important is the general exchange of ideas among colleagues to you?
Our previous inquiry was concerned with the general exchange of ideas among graphic designers, since graphic design is very much a public profession.

The encouraging news is that over four fifths do believe that engaging in a discussion with colleagues is positive. There is, however, a small number of those who prefer trust their own better judgement and are not troubled with professional conversations, and the lowest number sees the general exchange of ideas as something that is there but is not of great importance.

How important is the general exchange of ideas among colleagues to you?
Very 82%
Fairly so 8%
Not in the least 10%
