Icograda Regional Meeting
Graphic Design in Australasia

29 > 30 November 2001, Melbourne (Australia).

On 29 and 30 November 2001, an Icograda Regional Meeting (IRM) will be held at RMIT University in Melbourne (Australia). This meeting will be a unique opportunity for participants to meet and discuss the state of Graphic Design in the Australasia region (Australia, New Zealand, New Guinea, the Philippines, Indonesia, Oceania...). This will also provide a good opportunity to create, or revitalise, links with colleagues at the forefront of the Graphic Design profession.

Graphic Designers face numerous challenges and often operate under difficult circumstances. The Melbourne IRM is an opportunity for representatives of Graphic Design communities to share experiences, exchange information, and discover ways to overcome challenges together.

The Melbourne IRM will permit an open and candid exchange between participants and the Icograda Board. Delegates will have the opportunity to make brief presentations on the situation in their region or country. Presentations will be followed by relevant discussions and workshops. An attempt will be made to forge a regional agenda for the Graphic Design profession, which can foster co-operation, permit shared activities, and lead to mutual benefits.

There is no registration or entry fee for the Icograda Regional Meeting (nor for the Icograda Over the Fence Seminar which will also be held on 29 November!) The Melbourne IRM is by invitation only, and requires advance registration of representatives. A Registration Form can be obtained from the Icograda Secretariat via e-mail at secretariat@icograda.org

Why?
Vaclav Mekyska, BBA-UVU, Czech Republic

This work was not ordered by any particular client. It is my spontaneous reaction to an event which has no parallel in the history of civilisation.

Stereotypes on the street
by Peter Bilak

It is common to trace the roots of the modern traffic signs back to the cave paintings at Lascaux, the Roman compulsory measurement of routes, or the Chinese road workers from the Chow dynasty. My fascination, however, is firmly rooted in the twentieth century and the traffic sign as urban expression.

How many of your clients think they are designers?
You may have found yourself in the position where a client has already made the Design in his own head, and just wants you to transform it into reality. How many of your clients do try to impose their own design ideas upon you?

Give your opinion and vote at http://www.icograda.org

F R O M   P R E V I O U S   O P I N I O N

Do we, as fellows of the same profession, communicate enough among ourselves?
As we have established in a previous poll, most of us agree that a general exchange of ideas is of great importance. Now we wanted to know if you think that designers put this into practice or not.

The results show, above all, a good deal of indecision but it is striking that almost three quarters of us maintain that mutual communication is not at a satisfactory level. Most noteworthy is the fact that well above a third of all poll-takers thought that we do not communicate at all.

Do we, as fellows of the same profession, communicate enough among ourselves?
Generally, yes 29%
Occasionally 36%
Not at all 37%

Masters of the 20th Century - The Icograda Design Hall of Fame (1974-1999)
C: Sue Griffin
T: + 32 2 676 9761
E: sue.griffin@eu.sappi.com

As an official sponsor of Icograda and their Sappi Design World Design Convergence, which included the Continental Shift Icograda Congress, in South Africa in September 2001, Sappi is committed to building its close relationship with this important design association and its national Members. To this end, Sappi has supported the publication of a beautiful book on the Icograda Masters of the 20th Century. The book which will be available in autumn 2001, celebrates graphic design of the last century and is published by Graphis.
"We are proud to see the ideas of such famous graphic designers on our paper" enthuses corporate communications manager Craig Halgreen. "The book is designed by Mervyn Kurlansky and we are confident that the community will appreciate its value."
Mervyn Kurlansky also designed a mailing for Sappi which will offer an opportunity to the design community to enter a prize draw and win a free advance copy of the book, 50 of which will be signed by Mervyn himself. Everyone who responds to the mailing will receive a poster printed on Magno Satin 170 gsm from Sappi. This original poster from the Sappi Poster Collection is based on the designs of the masters contained in the book and is a creative collector's piece.
The Icograda Master of the 20th Century promises to be an important reference to date.
For a copy of the poster and further information, contact Sue Griffin.
