A Truly Mind-Opening Experience
The state of design in Australasia and in Asia
On 29 November, from 14 to 21:30, Icograda and the Australian Graphic Design Association (AGDA) will organise an international Design Perspectives Seminar. Speakers from China, Israel, Denmark, South Africa, Malaysia, and the United Kingdom will provide the designers with a wonderful opportunity to look over the fence into other peoples design communities.
Icograda opens its Melbourne Regional Meeting in the morning at nine o'clock which will last until 12:30. This first session of the Regional Meeting will be open to the public and include presentations on the state of design in countries like New Zealand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Laos, China, Philippines, and, of course, Australia. Lecturers will showcase samples of works from their countries as well as pictures of the environment in which designers work. They will explain and share with the audience the challenges and difficulties designers are facing in their daily professional life. A truly mind-opening experience.
No Entry Fee.

Book jackets of Bastard Editions
Dejan Krsic & Rutta, Arkzin, HDD, Croatia
Bastard Editions is a bibliotheque that has social theory and ideology issues as their prime subject. Each design is created individually, and it endeavours to establish a relationship between the visual interpretation and the actual work's content. The format of all books is identically retained throughout; the choice of paper and typeface, as well as book layout are determined according to the context of a book. For instance, the idea for Manifest and Society of Spectacle was not to present them as classical works of the famliar revolutionary iconology, but to have them visually refer to the world of corporate design or consummerism.

Moving the Sticks Around: designing Western letter forms
Talk at TypoJanchi Conference, by Colin Banks, President, International Society of Typographic Designers, Seoul, October 2001
Korea where typography began; type, the material I have been lucky enough to work with and enjoy for over 50 years. Typography like all design, is design with a purpose, its purpose is communication... about passing on information, about entertainment, persuasion, history and custom, about commerce. I am a typographer.

Did you encounter an idea similar or same to your own in another designer's work?
In such a competitive discipline as graphic design, it can easily happen that we come across another designer's work that has a similar or same idea as our own, or even looks just the same. Although resemblances are likely to happen as they reflect a similar way of visual thinking, there can be also cases of sheer plagiarism.

How many of your clients think they are designers?
We asked you how many of your clients try to impose their own design ideas upon you or have a definite idea of what they want design to look like and insist upon it.
It seems that over a half of our clients appear to think they are designers. Another 23 percent of you state that half of their clients have the same attitude, which combined makes for a 67.5 percent of [greater equal]clients-designers[less equal]. The lucky 21 percent of you do not encounter such phenomena, but the number is much too small to be of any comfort.
How many of your clients think they are designers?
Most of them 56%
About a half 23%
A few or none 21%

A new name & new looks Canadian Craft & Design Museum

E: matt@emdoubleyu.com
The Canadian Craft Museum, a fixture on the Vancouver cultural scene for over a decade, is now broadening its mandate to include the world of design. This expansion provides new exhibition and educational opportunities and is already leading to many new partnerships. The museum intends to become a venue dedicated to examining the impact of design on daily life and create a dynamic forum for the exchange of ideas related to craft and design. The stimulation of discussion and creativity will ideally reinforce Canadian expertise and inventiveness that has not received the recognition it deserves.

Two young designers to lead the Design Departments at Cranbrook Academy of Art
Bloomfield Hills, MI, USA
C: Elliott Earls
E: elliott@theapolloprogram.com
The illustrious history of design at the Cranbrook Academy of Art extends into the 21st century with the appointment of two very significant young designers, Elliott Earls and Scott Klinker. Earls and Klinker have just arrived at the Eliel Saarinen designed campus to lead the studio programs in two and three-dimensional design respectively. They will continue the distinguished Cranbrook Design legacy that includes Eero Saarinen, Charles and Ray Eames, Florence Knoll, Harry Bertoia, Katherine and Michael McCoy, and most recently Peter Stathis, Laurie Haycock Makela and the late Scott Makela. Their appointments also extend the Cranbrook tradition of nurturing young designers by providing leadership opportunities at a critical juncture in their careers.

Obey the Giant: Life in the Image World
by Rick Poynor
Published by August/Birkh"user
W: http://www.augustmedia.co.uk
In this new collection of essays, Rick Poynor offers an incisive critique of key issues in design, advertising, photography, publishing and art - from graphic memes and the poverty of 'cool' to designer sex and death, culture jamming and the pleasure of imperfection. At a time when many are waking up to the coercive power of global commercial culture, Poynor shows how image-makers both collude with, and challenge, corporate control of the image world.

In addition, it has features on significant themes in graphic design, such as design for transport, photomontage, national identity and the underground press. At over 256 pages and with 400 colour illustrations it is a major new reference book on the subject. The book has been designed by the art director of Mute magazine, Damien Jaques.

2+3D
Poland
E: redakcja@2plus3d.pl
2+3D is a brand new Polish magazine devoted to design. It is published in Polish with summaries of the main articles in English. 2+3D should interest all the designers who want to know more about Eastern European design. Out of the Editorial: "Around three hundred magazines devoted to design are published all over the world. The last magazine of this type in Poland was called Projekt. It was published between 1956-1989. (...) Polish design has to get by with virtually no reliable and professional critique, without which no creative field can exist and develop. The lack of professional press greatly contributes to the present situation. For young designers, graduating from universities often means an end to broad discussions and exchange of experience on work related topics. Insufficiencies in a common hierarchy of values, models, assessment criteria, set terminology as well as in discussions, are felt not only in designers circles."
