Ideas that matter

Sappi, one of the world's leading paper producers, has invited designers around the world to draw from their beliefs with the launch of ideas that matter, a programme that provides grants for graphic designers to realise printed communication campaigns which support a cause of their choice.

This unique move results from the company's own interest in cause related marketing. Extensive research has demonstrated that causes benefit significantly from evocative campaigns, which gain exposure and raise funds from the public. Designers are critical to this process and are ideally placed to use their creativity, emotional insight and ability to create ideas that sell, for the benefit of society.

Substantial grants will be awarded by the Sappi Graphic Arts Foundation to non-profit organisations involved in scientific, cultural or relief programmes on the basis of the applications received from the designer. The applications will be judged in Europe, North America and South Africa by international selection committees, based on their creativity, practicality and potential effectiveness.

Designers are often passionate about causes which they themselves would like to support by volunteering their creative talent. However, other costs involved such as photography, paper, reprographics and print, prohibit cause related organisations from implementing the designers work, either in full or in part. Ideas that matter will therefore help to bring more and better campaigns to the public eye.

Designers, design companies, in-house design departments and students of design are invited to apply.

During the European launch of the programme, Wolfgang Pfarl, Chief Executive Officer of Sappi Fine Paper Europe, says, "It is our hope that ideas that matter will inspire graphic designers to maximise the potential of ideas on paper to bring worthy causes to the awareness of the public. It will benefit both the designer through exposure gained and the cause through funds raised.
