US -- Statistics on Newspapers
A new report, "Synergize for Success", published by Newspaper Association of America, shows that more people are now reading the electronic version of a newspaper, than the printed version. An interesting fact is that most online readers are continuing to read the paper-version of the newspaper. Only 15% of the online readers said they read printed newspapers less frequently. You can read more about this in Wired News, (13. Dec. 1999)

In the UK, BreakerTech, the start-up company that developed SoftSEAL, software that enables secure content delivery over the Internet, has developed a new feature to this product which impedes someone from copying and pasting images for reuse. This technology enables content providers control of access to images by allowing viewing text without the ability to view the image, or charging a fee to view and print the image.

By partnering education and industry, the intention is to encourage adoption of principles of excellence in design as a means to successful achievement in commerce and industry. The national Student Design Awards scheme is an initiative of the Design Institute of Australia in association with the Australian Graphic Designers Association. Both bodies are represented on the Design Advisory Group of the Student Design Awards.
The Projects:
Typically, the projects will encompass design innovation in such subjects as structural packaging, medical products, home furnishings, teaching and technology, product design, museum design, transportation design, animation, plant and equipment, consumer products, fashion design and textile design. Additional, broader ranging subjects are set from time to time, reflecting issues of social concern and/or government policy focus. These might include topics such as Less Crime Through Design, New Design for Old, and Sustainability. Cross-disciplinary team submissions are encouraged, reflecting the reality of commercial and industrial design environments.

International Design Conference in Aspen: The spirit of design
T: 970-925-2257
F: 970-925-8495
E: info@idca.org
We find ourselves at the cusp of a new era, one that appears to be as shaped by human ideas as it is filled with the fathomless unknown. How do we strike out in directions that reflect our beliefs and values? Human technology has propelled us into a time of extreme societal transition, and so we are confronted, not only as designers but as people, with the challenge to face the big questions: Does design have meaning? Is it a delivery system for meaning? Can it encode meaning? Can it enhance or clarify meaning? Or is design an end in itself?
The Spirit of Design, the 50th annual International Design Conference in Aspen, could be interpreted as an investigation into the soul of design. Since the IDCA has always taken a holistic approach to its topics, the conference will not offer a single hypothesis. Instead, it will explore the many potential meanings of the subject from the viewpoint of an international group of young and established designers from the worlds of graphic and product design, architecture and media design along with anthropologists, artists, writers, cognitive scientists, poets and filmmakers.
