Oullim means "the great harmony"
Icograda Millennium Congress Oullim 2000
Date: October 24-27, 2000

We have turned the calendar page to the new millennium. Toeing the line for a new start, we look back at the design of the past hundred years, think over the general drift of design today, and reset the nature of design for the forthcoming era.
20th century design flowered from the soil of industrialization. The prevailing values were those of mass production, which, because it is premised on competition and stands against nature, in aesthetic terms can be viewed as "contrast." It leads to the dualism of superordinate vs. subordinate and good vs. bad. In the near past we witnessed ecological destruction, the threat of increasing inhumanity, and other negative effects. Thus, at this juncture, we are in search of ideals to straighten out these matters. Oullim seems a fitting new concept in design. It promises to tune nature, man, and machines and to harmonize east and west, north and south, as well as past, present, and future.
Oullim does not reject individuality. On the contrary, individuality contributes to forming the greater whole. In a world where all things are at rest together in great harmony, one individual does not impair another. There is dynamic equilibrium between "you" and "me." This opposition is merged into a greater whole in the overall melding of diversity.
Oullim knows no demarcation between the whole and the individual, nor between principle and substance. The spirit of Oullim emanates from putting on an equal footing man and man, man and nature, and all things and nature.
Oullim will be manifested in the course of pursuing harmony with a mind exquisitely balanced between openness and restraint and possessed of a deep understanding of all the lives around us. Oullim is the providence that generates the lives of all men abiding between heaven and earth. It is the very spirit of nature and of man. Design is the result of man in pursuit of perfect harmony of soul. Therefore the quintessence of design cannot but be the quintessence of nature.
Now, hoping to break off the contrasts that chained us in previous times, we sense that the Oullim spirit is the virtue that we should cultivate in the vineyard of new design.
