Oullim Congress Program
Day 0: Opening Evening
Oullim: <where we were, where we are, where we are going>
On the eve of the congress, a number of prominent dignitaries will welcome participants to Seoul as part of the opening ceremonies and delegates and guests will be treated to an evening of refreshments and performances.
Day 1: Oullim: East and West
The first full day of the congress will feature presentations by eight speakers on the theme of 'the Oullim of East and West.' The theme will explore ways in which the rationalist design traditions of the West and naturalist design traditions of the East can be harmoniously merged. In the spirit of Oullim, the two great traditions can be the source of a new paradigm and this Seoul event is sure to be remembered as a new start for design.
Day 2: Oullim: Nature, Humans, and Technology
The second day of the congress will feature thirty-two parallel sessions enabling partici-pants to meet in small groups to discuss a variety of topics related to the theme of 'the Oullim of Nature, Humans, and Technology.' The start of the new millennium calls for an earnest examination of our relationships with nature and technology. Through the small group sessions, participants will have the opportunity to explore the issue of how humans, nature, and technology can coexist in a symbiotic relationship of harmony and to examine the role of design in achieving this goal.
Day 3: Oullim: Past, Present, and Future
The congress will conclude with presentations by eight speakers and a closing ceremony. On this final day, speakers will examine the theme of 'the Oullim of Past, Present, and Future,' delving into questions about how design can emerge from the rational tradition of modernism and address the new social needs and paradigms of life in the new world.
Featured speakers will include:
Sheilla de Brettebille (USA), Jonathan Barn-brook (UK), Michel Bouvet (France), David Carson (USA), Vladimir Chaika (Russia), Don Chang (Korea), Cho Young-Che (Korea), Cyan (Germany), Brian Eno (UK), Garry Emery (Australia), April Greiman (USA), William Harald-Wong (Malaysia), Laurie Haycock Makela (USA), Hwang Yung Sung (Taiwan, China), Amrik Kalsi (Kenya), Hara Kenya (Japan), Kan Tai Keung (Hong Kong, China), Sadik Karamustafa (Turkey), Kim Young-Oak (Korea), Lee Sung-Pyo (Korea), Laurence Madrelle (France), Chaz Maviyane-Davis (Zimbabwe), Thomas Mueller (USA), Orange Juice (South Africa), Kveta Pacovska (Czech Republic), Bernd Schmidt (USA), Erik Spiek-ermann (Germany), Henry Steiner (Hong Kong, China), Kohei Sugiura (Japan), Lucille Tenazas (USA), Tomato (UK), Wang-Xu (China),...

The 50th annual International Design Confer-ence in Aspen could be interpreted as an in-vestigation into the soul of design. Since the IDCA has always taken a holistic approach to its topics, the conference will not offer a single hypothesis. Instead, it will explore the many potential meanings of the subject from the viewpoint of an international group of young and established designers from the worlds of graphic and product design, architecture and media design along with anthropologists, art-ists, writers, cognitive scientists, poets and filmmakers. Confirmed speakers include: Ayse Birsel, Ellen Dissanayke, Hella Jongerius, Mi-chael Rotondi, Robert Thurman, Frederick Turner, Ed Weinberger, Scott Schmidt, and Margaret Wertheim.
