Oullim Congress: Special Events
Icograda Event
Icograda Seoul Education Manifesto
The opening of the new millennium also inaugurates a new era for design. Icograda's special millennium congress provides an opportunity to reevaluate and redefine the principles and goals of design education. A manifesto to be read at the Oullim congress will express such a new design philosophy.
Icograda Regional Meeting
A meeting of East Asian graphic designers held in conjunction with the congress will be a historical event for designers of the region. This regional meeting will give Asian designers a chance to dialogue with colleagues and formulate strategies and directions for a new era in design.
Cutting Edge Video Competition
Cutting Edge aims to encourage designers working with moving images in either video or multimedia formats. Entries of works dealing with the theme of 'Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow' up to one minute in length are invited. The deadline for the competition, which carries a cash prize, is September 30, 2000.
Designit
Designit was launched in 1998 by UK Prime Minister Tony Blair and Korea's President Kim Dae Jung in an effort to encourage youths from Europe and Asia to tap their creative powers by collaborating on innovative design projects. As a sister event, the best of the joint projects will be displayed at an ASEM exhibition to be held concurrently with the Oullim congress.

Icograda Regional Meeting in Istanbul
Icograda Event
V: Istanbul, Turkey
C: Sadik Karamustafa
E: sadik@turk.net
The current board of Icograda has focused on the special needs of graphic designers working in developing and emerging economies. Within this framework, regional meetings are being organized in a number of locations. In April 2000, in association with the Graphist graphic design event in Istanbul, a regional meeting for the countries of the Middle East will take place. Additional meetings are planned for Seoul, in association with the OULLIM Icograda Congress, in October 2000 and in Zagreb in April 2001.
At the regional meeting, officials of Icograda, in collaboration with the local design community, will chair a meeting of representatives of the graphic design communities of the region. In addition to representatives of member associations of Icograda, the regional meetings will be open to individual designers, educators, government and industry representatives and to groups of designers that have yet to create official associations.
The regional meeting will be a forum in which to discuss common problems and challenges, exchange information and experiences and adopt a program of shared activities to promote graphic design.
The regional meetings are held in association with larger public events in order to provide participants with an opportunity to meet colleagues and participate in additional activities.

Icograda Design Education Manifesto
Icograda Event
With the Design Education Manifesto, the intention is to create a working document addressing fundamental principles with which design education should concern itself.
In a first stage we want to collect keywords which represent fundamental design principles we should always embrace. The mechanic of participation will operate through a closer-user-group website.
You can send your keywords at: http://www.sidi.hongik.ac.kr/~manifest/

Emigre Indie Distribution
During the past few years, Emigre has opened its distribution system to designers and artists who have independently produced publications and other graphic rarities. Our aim is to help provide the proper exposure and distribution needed to bring these unique projects to the attention of its
intended audience. Emigre's interest is in small run, limited edition, and other rare and experimental projects, both verbal and visual, including but not limited to exhibition catalogs, multimedia Cds, essays in book form, and magazines. Projects must be printed in quantities of at least 50 copies. If you have a self published project that you are trying to sell, and you would like Emigre to function as your distributor, send them a copy, and they will consider adding your project to their list. Following are two new projects recently added to their collection of distributed rarities:
The Culture of Aesthetic Poverty
Published by Titanium
Edited and designed by Kevin Grady, The Culture of Aesthetic Poverty is a collection of essays, poetry, and photographs exploring design and social responsibility. The book features contributions from architects Brenda Case Scheer and David Scheer, RES Media creative director Colin Metcalf, Interior Design Hall of Famer Arnold Friedmann, psychotherapist F. Patrick Grady, and renowned comic artist R. Crumb. The book decries the lack of value placed on aesthetics in American society. "If aesthetics have any innate value," writes Metcalf, "it is as marketing tool. Designers are not to explore the leading edge of their professions. They are service dolts who are to fulfill a market agenda by simply providing the expected and facilitating sales projections."
64 pages, 5 x 7 inches, softcover.

Lessons In Urban Education: an outdoor proj-ect from Swallow
Press (x2)
Published by Swallow Press (x2)
This is the original project that formed the basis for the visual essay created by Swallow Press (x2) for Emigre #53. Using the streets and sidewalks of Portland as their stage, artist-team Swallow Press (x2) strives to challenge traditional notions of art, ownership and authorship in the public sphere. Lessons In Urban Education, presented during the fall of 1999, was a citywide campaign consisting of posters containing nonlinear images and text meant to inject art into the everyday. 2000 posters were stapled to telephone poles and wildposted throughout the Portland Metropolitan area encouraging viewers to play an active role in interpreting, decoding and understanding the six-part "story" they present. A limited number of posters remains and are available for purchase through Emigre.
Poster, 23.5 x 36 inches, offset printed on matte coated stock in full color on both sides, folded and presented in custom designed envelope.

The theme of the sixth edition of Trattocontinuo is leisure. Leisure time takes on new meanings, increasing the possibilities of its use with new activities and products. In this frame of reference, many scholars are reevaluating the concept of leisure, stripping it of the negative connotations that it had accumulated in industrial society.
This competition is open to all young people aged between 18 and 30 on 31st December 1999.
