Design Austria, the Austrian professional association of graphic designers, illustrators and product designers, organizes a yearly international competition, the Joseph Binder Award, which for the first time was held in 1996. It is named after one of the organization's founding fathers, Joseph Binder (1898-1972), who revolutionized contemporary visual design both in Europe and in the United States. This year's competition explores new developments and trends in the field of graphic design & illustration.
Entries may be submitted in the categories Corporate Design, Communication Design, Information Design, Poster Design, Editorial Design, Packaging Design and Illustration. A special category, Design Fiction, has been introduced for unpublished works or independent projects.
The Members of the jury are: Walter Bohatsch (Austria), Fritz Gottschalk (Switzerland/Canada), Barry J. Hewson (Austria), Freda Sack (United Kingdom), Hans Peter Schneider (Switzerland).

Jury members were Rita Berger (Austria), Paula Scher (USA) Michal Batory (France), Chaz Mavian-Davies (Zimbabwe), Yosi Lemel (Isra'l), Kan Tai-Keung (Hong Kong) et Riccardo Petrella (Italy) and met on April 3-4
95 projects have been selected and will be included in the image bank. Five projects have been awarded : Marion Le Masurier (France), Pan Qin (China), Cyril Kobler (Switzerland), Stefan Sheer (Germany) and Liu Xingrui (China).
