Agenda (new dates)

April 1, June 11, 2000
Font, Sumner Stone, Calligraphy and Type Design in a DigitalAge.
V:
at Ditchling Museum,
In an age dominated by visual imagery, the look and shape of letters matters more than ever. As the keyboard becomes a more familiar tool than pen or pencil, and the ancient bond between handwritten letterforms and the type used by printers seems about to vanish, what will determine the standards of legibility, clarity, impact or fluency of the alphabets that fill our daily lives?

FONT explores the relationship between calligraphy, type and the new digital technology through the work of one of the world's greatest typographers, the American Sumner Stone.
A calligrapher by training, and now one of the leading figures in the application of the computer to type design, Stone has entered into a unique collaboration with Ditchling Museum. The exhibition he has helped to create focuses on the development of a single new typeface, BASALT. Seen at every stage of its creation, BASALT is set alongside other work by Stone, together with examples of both historical and contemporary lettering he admires.

As well as providing a rare insight into the creative process, the exhibition shows how the shape of our entire visual environment is changing at the beginning of the new century; not just on the small scale of the desktop screen, but also in the special demands of public signage for locations as diverse as a university campus and the Paris Metro.

Not money: Value
V:
Berlin, Germany
E: mailto:monomedia@hdk-berlin.de,
W: http://www.monomedia.hdk-berin/english.html
The Berlin University of the Arts presents a conference about new media culture and society focusing on the way networked interactive media change the ways we deal with value -- and values.

Sharing value: While used in a highly individual way, networks enable us to share opinions and experiences with millions. Recommendation systems, special-interest communities and knowledge management systems -- as well as tools for analysis -- are revolutionizing the way we make choices. Featuring: Dick Rijken, Robin Hanson, Matthew Chalmers, Victoria Vesna and Richard Rogers.

Value exchange: Emerging types of non-monetary exchange environments are combining global reach with the almost-forgotten values of the village market. Featuring: Michael Goldhaber, Rishab Ayer Gosh, Naoki Oba, Craig Newmark, Dwight Herpeger, Gerd Kortuem.

Flock of values: Announcing the death of corporate image! Organizations are becoming open infrastructures that can survive only when distinguished by the value system that they share with their users. Featuring: Willem Velthoven, Brian Eno, Diana Krabbendam, Anthony Dunne and Bert Mulder.

Value shift: The primary structures of society, economy and government are heavily effected by media culture and networks. As globalization blends with localization, loosely organized groups are exerting unpredictable new powers. Featuring: Manuel DeLanda, Richard Barbrook, Etoy, Saskia Sassen and Paul Frissen.

Value fictions: The scenario-based, value-driven design methods that are being developed throughout Europe are generating inspiring results. How can we be designers of processes and services? We'll share enough fresh ideas to fill a host of incubators. Featuring members of the Royal College of Art London, Hochschule der Künste Berlin and various independent contributors.

The Expert Forum on the design of user manuals will focus on the development and usage of visual instructions for technical products. The increasing complexity and variety of these products makes them more difficult to use effectively. Pictorial and textual instructions, whether on paper or on screen, whether static or dynamic, attempt to counteract this trend. Focussing on manuals will provide opportunities to discuss product-use from the perspective of information design.
